Material and Chemical Laboratory Intern

MAHLE•Troy, MI
•$19 - $21

About The Position

The Material and Chemical Laboratory Intern serves as a laboratory and engineering assistant, performing advanced measurements on MAHLE components, including automotive HVAC systems and engine cooling products. The role involves routine and non-routine materials science and metallographic sample preparation, chemical analysis, and physical and mechanical testing. The intern also supports corrosion laboratory activities by preparing and monitoring test solutions, preparing samples, and assisting with environmental testing chambers. The position includes compiling and analyzing measurement data, presenting results in formal reports and presentations, and assisting Materials, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering teams with special projects. The intern must maintain accurate sample identification, follow laboratory and site procedures, and report test results accurately. The role requires interfacing with engineers and other stakeholders to understand test requirements and procedures. The intern works within the Laboratory Scope and Capabilities, operating multiple test benches and performing basic metallographic work such as sample cleaning, sectioning, mounting, polishing, and imaging. They prepare samples and parts to specified tolerances and test them according to ASTM and other customer or MAHLE specifications. The role also includes operating and maintaining laboratory testing and preparation equipment, supporting corrosion tests and exposure solutions, leak testing heat exchangers, observing test data for consistency, reporting irregularities to engineers, following daily assignments, and keeping the work area clean and orderly.
