About The Position

The Masters Swim Coach leads the administration and implementation of high-quality, structured workouts for a diverse community of athletes for the YMCA’s Masters swim program. This role is responsible for providing expert instruction in stroke technique, endurance, and stamina, catering to everyone from fitness-seekers to elite-level competitive athletes. In alignment with YMCA of San Diego and U.S.A Swimming guidelines, the Masters Swim Coach fosters a highly motivational and inclusive environment where every participant feels welcome. Beyond technical coaching, this role ensures the absolute safety of the aquatic environment through vigilant supervision and sound judgment, directly advancing the YMCA’s mission to promote healthy living and social responsibility through a premier adult aquatics experience.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years of age
  • Formal education, usually obtained by a High School Diploma/GED, or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in competitive swimming, aquatic coaching or instruction, or a combination of both.
  • Current Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer (BLS) that must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to obtain Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving certification within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and execute Masters swim workouts tailored to a diverse range of abilities, from fitness-seekers to elite-level competitive athletes.
  • Provide analysis of swimming form and stroke mechanics, offering real-time technical corrections and individualized feedback to improve athlete performance and efficiency.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants by strictly enforcing pool rules and maintaining readiness to respond immediately to emergencies according to aquatic protocols.
  • Provide in-person support for the Masters swim program, proactively communicating schedule changes, workout objectives, and program updates to participants.
  • Conduct daily duties and inspections of the pool area and equipment that ensure a properly maintained, organized, and safe environment; report any maintenance needs or hazards to the Aquatics Director or Coordinator.
  • Oversee the proper use, storage, and maintenance of all swim team equipment, ensuring gear is functional and communicating repairs or replacements to the Aquatics Director or Coordinator immediately.
  • Serves as a professional representative of the Masters swim program in all interactions with participants, members, families, and community partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.
