About The Position

The State of Utah Department of Corrections is seeking a highly skilled Master Plumber to manage, maintain, and safeguard facility infrastructure. The Master Plumber serves as an expert in complex industrial-grade pumping, piping, and waste treatment systems, taking responsibility for solving critical structural challenges and executing strategic infrastructure project oversight. This role holds total accountability for structural design, long-term operational health, permit accuracy, and regulatory safety compliance across the facility fluid grid. Applicants who hold a Journey Plumber license are strongly encouraged to apply. Qualified candidates who do not yet meet the Master Plumber criteria may be hired as a Journey Plumber (Job Code 52304) under general supervision, gaining valuable hands-on experience on industrial-grade systems while working toward Master Plumber licensure and advancement.

Requirements

  • Must possess an active license as a Master Plumber.
  • Must possess an active license as a Journey Plumber.
  • Strenuous physical exertion required, including standing for extended periods, climbing, walking over rough surfaces, crouching, crawling in restricted spaces, and recurring lifting of heavy objects over 50 pounds.
  • Must possess the physical capability to defend oneself and/or others against physical attack.
  • Exposure to moderate and special environmental risks, including working at great heights, extreme outdoor weather conditions, operating heavy machinery, and potential contact with hazardous chemicals or contagious diseases.
  • Work is performed inside a secure correctional environment subject to strict security protocols.
  • Must be available to provide 24-hour emergency on-call services.
  • A comprehensive background investigation, which may include a polygraph, may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource to assist management, staff, clients, and facility partners in identifying optimal plumbing solutions.
  • Ensure all facility water supply lines, backflow networks, industrial pumping infrastructure, and fluid discharge grids comply strictly with the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), NFPA safety standards, and state health rules.
  • Lead or functionally supervise staff and inmate crews, delegate work assignments, schedule personnel, monitor work quality, provide technical training, and offer input on performance appraisals.
  • Plan and manage complex plumbing projects, draft project plans and findings, and build, fabricate, or repair structures and equipment using blueprints, working drawings, or verbal directions.
  • Recommend fund prioritization, implement service delivery budgets, track allocations and expenditures, and evaluate field operations to re-prioritize resources as needed.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve plumbing system failures using modern installation, repair, and preventative maintenance techniques.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate plumbing operations and projects, preparing project plans and recommendations.
  • Teach team members trade principles, adherence to industry safety standards, and correct maintenance of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Repair, clean, adjust, and maintain tools, machinery, and equipment while maintaining detailed service records and logs.
