About The Position

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for a Master Mechanic. The Department of Public Services and Engineering is responsible for maintaining the City’s physical infrastructure and maintenance for the City’s beaches, facilities, parks, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems, and rights of way, while protecting the public’s health and safety. The department also provides engineering management, including planning, design, construction, and repair of the City’s buildings, parks, streets, and utility systems in addition to management of a wide range of services and programs. Under direction, to supervise, assign, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing maintenance and repair work on City vehicles, automobiles, trucks, and other light and heavy gasoline and diesel power-driven equipment; to ensure work quality and adherence to work standards and established policies and procedures; and to perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in vehicle repair and maintenance, including one year of supervisory or lead responsibility.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in vehicle maintenance and repair or a related field.
  • Possession of a valid Class A License or obtain the license within six (6) months of employment, or twelve (12) months at the discretion of the Director. In lieu of a Class A License, employees hired before September 30, 2022, may possess a valid Class B license, a safe driving record, or the ability to obtain the license within six (6) months of appointment is required, or twelve (12) months at the discretion of the Director.
  • ASE Certifications: A4, A5, A6 related to vehicles/equipment active within the City fleet are required.
  • California Fire Mechanics Academy (CFMA) Emergency Vehicle Technician I is required within twelve (12) months of appointment, or eighteen (18) months at the discretion of the Director.

  • California Fire Mechanics Academy (CFMA) Emergency Vehicle Technician II, ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician, or ASE Master Automobile Technician certifications are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing maintenance and repair work on City vehicles, automobiles, trucks, and other light and heavy gasoline and diesel power-driven equipment.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing fleet maintenance and repair services; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Perform the more technical and complex tasks of the work unit including troubleshooting and diagnosing complex vehicle problems and designing and fabricating special parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for the purchase and control of parts and replacement equipment necessary to facilitate repairs and maintenance of vehicles; maintain an inventory of parts and equipment.
  • Develop bid specifications for the purchase of new vehicles and/or equipment; analyze and evaluate equipment lifecycle; communicate with other departments regarding their special vehicle and equipment requirements.
  • Oversee daily operations of the alternative fuel vehicle program for the City.
  • Develop and implement various special programs as required by State laws and regulations including, but not limited to, smog inspections and California Highway Patrol programs.
  • Participate in the selection of assigned mechanic staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
  • Participate in the preparation and administration of the assigned program budget; submit budget recommendations; and monitor expenditures.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities; maintain reports, files, and records.
  • May participate in rotational shifts including weekends and Standby/On-Call shifts as required. Employees assigned to Standby or On-Call duty must be available to respond and report to work within a reasonable amount of time, typically within forty-five (45) minutes of the receipt of the call.

  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for Classic CalPERS hired prior to January 1, 2013, is Members is 3% at 60. The current employee contribution rate is 9.5%.
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for PEPRA CalPERS Members, hired after January 1, 2013, is 2% at 62. The current employee contribution rate is 7.50%.
