About The Position

A GM Master Technician is a highly skilled automotive professional who specializes in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining General Motors (GM) vehicles to GM’s exact standards. This role requires extensive training, certification, and hands-on experience, and is often a career milestone in GM’s Certified Service Technician path. GM Master Technicians are responsible for performing advanced diagnostics and repairs on complex GM vehicles, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, steering, and HVAC. They ensure repairs meet GM’s quality and safety standards using the latest diagnostic tools and technology, and maintain and service engine performance, electrical/electronics, and drivetrain systems. This role also involves mentoring and training junior technicians to improve shop performance and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Achieved through GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) or GM Service Technical College (STC) training.
  • Requires completing Master Technician Certification (MTC) in select mechanical or body areas, often alongside ASE certifications.
  • Must maintain 100% Service Technical Standards (STS) annually to retain certification.
  • Advanced diagnostics and computer-aided repair techniques.
  • Expertise in engine performance, diesel engine performance, transmission servicing, and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in ECU programming and vehicle software updates.
  • Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor and train other technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Performing advanced diagnostics and repairs on complex GM vehicles, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, steering, and HVAC.
  • Ensuring repairs meet GM’s quality and safety standards using the latest diagnostic tools and technology.
  • Maintaining and servicing engine performance, electrical/electronics, and drivetrain systems.
  • Mentoring and training junior technicians to improve shop performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct comprehensive vehicle inspections and identify root causes of complex issues.
  • Use advanced diagnostic scanners, oscilloscopes, and proprietary GM tools.
  • Perform quality control checks and ensure compliance with safety and emissions regulations.
  • Lead repair workflows and assist in shop operations, including foreman duties in some roles.
  • Stay updated on new GM technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicle systems.
