About The Position

JVS is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency dedicated to empowering individuals from diverse communities to find employment and build careers, and to partner with employers to hire, develop, and retain productive workforces. JVS offers a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS also assists employers in finding qualified job applicants and upgrading their incumbent workforces. MassHire Downtown Boston, operated by JVS Boston, is one of 21 MassHire One-Stop Career Center locations in Massachusetts. The Career Navigator will deliver innovative, customer-focused workforce development services at the MassHire Downtown Boston Career Center, collaborating with the Career Center team to assist job seekers from diverse backgrounds and experience levels in conducting successful job searches and obtaining employment.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree plus two years of hands-on experience and/or training in areas such as career counseling, case management, recruitment, education, coaching, or counseling; alternatively, a comparable blend of education, training, and practical experience.
  • Advanced computer and technology competency.
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and Zoom.
  • Excellent organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills to effectively engage with diverse individuals (including staff, clients, and stakeholders).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Teaching or public speaking skills/experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personalized 1:1 career coaching virtually, onsite at MassHire Downtown Boston’s office, and offsite at partner locations in the Boston region as required.
  • Lead job search webinars and workshops on topics such as career exploration, networking, resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, negotiation, and more.
  • Assist customers in the Career Resource Center with membership registration, job search strategies, and accessing Career Center resources and services.
  • Connect with employers and complete administrative tasks for the Career Center.
  • Conduct individualized coaching sessions for clients with diverse backgrounds.
  • Advise clients on all aspects of the job search process including career exploration, networking, resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, negotiation, and more.
  • Assist clients in navigating and overcoming employment barriers.
  • Empower clients to articulate their unique skills and value proposition.
  • Equip clients with the knowledge and resources to effectively stand out to potential employers.
  • Collaborate with clients to establish tangible, actionable goals for their job search.
  • Accurately identify clients’ needs and direct them to the appropriate resources.
  • Maintain accurate notes and records in the MOSES database and internal Excel spreadsheets.
  • Co-lead job search webinars and workshops on topics such as career exploration, networking, resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, interviewing, negotiation, and more.
  • Facilitate workshops with expertise and professionalism using adult education methodologies that employ engaging facilitation techniques, whether in-person or through virtual platforms, and leverage technology to foster maximum participant interaction and learning.
  • Register new members by facilitating the intake process and introducing them to available career center resources.
  • Support customers’ job search efforts by providing direct guidance on applications, resume formatting, and search strategies.
  • Provide technical assistance for computer navigation, including help with internet usage, file management, and office equipment.
  • Triage and direct customers to the appropriate workshops, staff members, and specialized services based on their needs.
  • Manage Resource Center operations, including monitoring computer lab usage and performing basic administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate with partner agencies to integrate career services into their programs.
  • Perform general administrative tasks and special projects as requested by management to support daily Career Center operations and overall efficiency of the Career Center.
  • Build relationships with employers, training providers, and partner organizations to support employment and training opportunities for customers.
  • Actively promote the mission and philosophy of JVS/MassHire, both within the agency and in the community.
  • Collaborate as a vital member of the JVS and MassHire team to deliver high-quality workforce development services.
  • Engage in a team environment; establish and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders, including participants, colleagues, partner organizations, and funders.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of internet resources for job seekers.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of local and national labor market trends to assist job seekers with identifying career opportunities, with support from the Employer Engagement team.
  • Participate in meetings / planning sessions with JVS MassHire staff to monitor services and implement strategies to improve performance and service delivery.
  • Establish, track, and meet program dashboard indicators using MOSES platform.
  • Serve and refer customers in accordance with the requirements of One-Stop Career Centers and ensure services are based on individual customer goals.
  • Work effectively with staff to ensure appropriate referrals to services and employment opportunities.
  • Attend and actively contribute to staff meetings and team initiatives.
  • Understand and implement policies and best practices contained in the Massachusetts One-Stop Career Center Charter.
  • Demonstrate a professional demeanor with strong customer service skills.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form with compassion and professionalism.
  • Exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Participate in meetings, in-service training, team-based projects and committees.
  • Communicate regularly with the Supervisor to ensure smooth delivery of community relations services.
  • Complete program summary reports for employers, funders, JVS leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
