About The Position

Under general supervision, the Mason performs journey-level masonry tasks consisting of concrete, plaster, stucco, block, brick, tile, stone, and related tools and materials used in the profession. The incumbent performs repair work on buildings and hardscape while supporting maintenance, construction maintenance, and renovation projects across campus. Builds forms, grades, and shoots elevations; uses a transit or builder’s level; mixes, pours, and finishes concrete. Performs labor required to break out old concrete and ensures its removal. Performs plaster, stucco, and concrete block work. This position installs concrete masonry blocks and bricks. Saws concrete and tarmac. Erects, maintains, and repairs forms and related temporary structures associated with masonry and concrete work. Operates cement mixers and other masonry-related tools and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard mason’s apprenticeship program.
  • Possess a valid California Driver's License.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of journey-level masonry methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safety practices, including concrete, plaster, stucco, block, brick, tile, and stone work.
  • Ability to build and repair forms, establish grades and elevations, mix, pour, and finish concrete, interpret rough sketches and plans, and perform demolition, repair, and installation work while ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and safety standards.
  • Working knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, tools, terminology, and construction support practices related to masonry and renovation projects.
  • Ability to operate masonry equipment and assigned motor vehicles.
  • Ability to perform form construction and removal, temporary support installation, rough patching, and access preparation.
  • Ability to provide task-related instruction to support staff.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate work with skilled trades personnel to complete projects safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of demolition techniques, materials handling practices, and construction site preparation related to plaster, drywall, cement, stucco, flooring, and tile removal.
  • Ability to safely perform demolition and repair work; remove cabinets, counters, flooring, ceramic, and tile materials; assist with drywall and metal stud installation; and prepare work areas to support maintenance, renovation, and construction projects.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety standards, hazard recognition, and safe work practices applicable to masonry, construction, and maintenance environments.
  • Ability to maintain clean and organized work areas, inspect tools and equipment for safe operation, identify and report unsafe conditions, implement corrective actions, and consistently follow established safety procedures while working indoors and outdoors.
