About The Position

This is skilled work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of brick and stone structures. An employee in this class is responsible for cutting, dressing, and setting various kinds of stone and brick in the construction, maintenance, and repair of a variety of brick and stone structures. Works independently on assignments; may supervise a subordinate helper.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in masonry, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training.
Possession of or must obtain within 120 days of employment, a valid State of Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices of masonry.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to use and care for masonry tools and materials.
Ability to lay bricks, concrete block, stone, cement, and tile.
Ability to work from sketches and plans.
Ability to estimate material needs.

Responsibilities

Uses chisel, hammer, and other shaping tools to shape stone for setting.
Spreads mortar over stone and foundation with trowel and sets stone in place.
Cuts and planes curb.
Moves stone into final position with mallet, hammer, or crow bar.
Finishes joints between stone with a pointing trowel.
Performs various building and grounds maintenance tasks.
Cuts, patches, and dresses various stones used in curbs, walls, and buildings.
Mixes cement and mortar.
Builds and rebuilds manholes and junction boxes.
Makes concrete slabs for junction boxes.
Finishes concrete traffic stanchions.
Operates heavy trucks with salt spreaders and plow attachments for snow removal and ice control purposes.
Performs related work as required.
