About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), in partnership with Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, is seeking two Masked Bobwhite Recovery Members to contribute to a captive breeding project. This role offers mentorship from USFWS Staff and provides exposure to land management agencies and networking opportunities. The position involves assisting with the care of masked bobwhite, a federally endangered species, at the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, which spans approximately 118,000 acres and serves as a recovery site. With a captive population exceeding 300 birds and no known wild populations, the care of these birds is vital to ongoing recovery efforts. The members will support and assist under the guidance of FWS staff in various tasks, including changing food and water, cleaning pens, observing birds for signs of injury, and learning to provide medical care. They will also be involved in vegetation management for outdoor pens, maintaining records, and collecting eggs for incubation. Attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, and a willingness to ask questions are essential for maintaining a healthy bird population.

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
  • Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements.
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
  • Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.

Nice To Haves

  • Hold a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as biology, wildlife conservation, zoology, animal caretaking or related fields.
  • Knowledge of avian biology, habitat assessment, animal handling, and/or animal caretaking.
  • Ability and willingness to follow instructions, express strong observational skills, have clear communication and ask questions.
  • Deep interest in animal care, wildlife conservation, and/or veterinary sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Changing food and water for birds.

  • Performing vegetation management to upkeep, plant, and manage vegetation growth in outdoor bird pens.
