About The Position

The Mascot, under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor- Special Events, will be responsible for engaging with community members at events, programs and community engagements. The Vernon Hills Park District mascot, Sully, represents the District in a positive manner by appropriately charming community members and creating loyal followers.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must understand and have the ability to deliver good customer service.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Good physical condition to wear heavy costume, stand and walk for extended periods of time in different weather conditions.
  • Must work closely with co workers and the general public.
  • Experiences ongoing concerns for all safety and liability issues.
  • Must have ability to deal with other people and children under chaotic situations.
  • If offered the position, the applicant will be required to complete the District’s Employment Application and successfully pass a physical examination, drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Lifting is occasional, usually 20 pounds or less.
  • Mascot must not lift patrons.
  • Daily tasks may vary, but involve significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some climbing, balancing, and frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • This position experiences bending movements and twisting, squatting, and reaching.
  • Exposure to a wide range of temperatures range from 32 degrees Fahrenheit to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • May be exposed to all weather conditions.
  • Work may be performed indoors and/or outdoors.
  • Environment conditions may vary from event/program to event/program.
  • Must be aware of the safety and liability consideration of the District operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Dance or drama experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with the public with enthusiasm and energy.
  • Be photographed with the public.
  • Preserve the identity of the mascot without deviating from established character including: body language, mannerisms, attitude, interaction and District representation.
  • Work well in a team environment.
  • Be able to read patron social cues to understand the level of interaction each person may want and act accordingly.
  • Represents the Park District in a positive manner.
  • Works in coordination with all internal departments to reach overall strategic objectives of the District.
  • Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Park District’s safety policies.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and occasional daytime business hours.
  • Performs any additional related tasks as required.
