About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for a Marketing Specialist (Digital) position within the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (SCVB). This role involves engaging with media to promote Springfield as a leisure tourism destination, coordinating tours, maintaining a contact database, contributing to Visitors Center operations, writing and editing promotional materials, and developing public relations programs. The specialist will also act as a media liaison when the Tourism Manager is unavailable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Hospitality Management, or a related field of study and five years of marketing or media experience; or any combination of education and experience.
  • Requires use of a vehicle for business purposes.
  • Valid Illinois Class D driver's license required.
  • Must pass the required background investigation and sign the departmental confidentiality statement.

  • Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
  • To be eligible to apply, current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position.

Responsibilities

  • Engage travel writers, editors, and related media and solicit editorial coverage selling Springfield as a leisure tourism destination.
  • Coordinate domestic and international familiarization tours and site visits.
  • Maintain database of tourism contacts in the department's Customer Relationship Management System.
  • Contribute to SCVB Visitors Center operations (Old State Capitol Plaza).
  • Write and edit copy for a variety of SCVB initiatives including, but not limited to, press releases, collateral materials, and external correspondence.
  • Develop and implement promotions and public relations programs targeting Springfield leisure tourism initiatives that may include direct mail, electronic communications, and social media campaigns.
  • Act as a liaison between SCVB and the media when the Tourism Manager is not available.
