About The Position

Reporting to the Divisional Vice President, Philanthropy, the Market Vice President, Philanthropy, is responsible for advancing fundraising for Winchester Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess - Needham within the Beth Israel Lahey Health system. The Market Vice President will have significant revenue responsibility and oversee one or more Vice Presidents or senior designated staff members, charged with managing a front line fund raising program for multiple hospitals or clinical units, and will have oversight of all associated capital campaigns. The Market Vice President will partner closely with Hospital Presidents, Leadership Teams, and the Divisional Vice President of Philanthropy across the hospitals and/or clinical units within their portfolio. In collaboration with the VP of Philanthropy, this individual will manage the institution’s top prospects, developing and executing strategies for engagement, stewardship, and solicitation of philanthropic gifts in the six-, seven-, and eight-figure range. The Market Vice President will build strong working relationships with all Board, Medical and Executive leadership to successfully drive forward fundraising priorities and engage the most important prospects to ensure that BILH hospital initiatives remain one of their highest philanthropic priorities. The Market Vice President will help to forge strategies for transformational gifts across multiple institutions and at the system level, and will participate in developing strategic and operating plans to drive a high-performing, growing integrated philanthropy program across BILH.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 15+ years of development experience, with an established track record in development and implementation of strategies and plans to substantially increase revenue and 5+ years supervisory/management experience required
  • Successful track record in closing 7 figure+ gifts.
  • Demonstrated success in forging strong working relationships and engendering trust from donors, board members and colleagues
  • Demonstrated success in building grateful patient relationships in service of major gift programs.
  • Demonstrated track record of working with non-profit boards, staffing board committees, and leading governance effectiveness activities.
  • Knowledge of the utilization of information systems to support fund raising activities.
  • Ability to travel, occasional evening and weekend work, and to adjust to other needs of the department.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Responsibilities

  • As a member of the BILH Philanthropy leadership team, participate in developing the short and long-term vision, strategies, and plans to ensure the continued innovation, development and revenue growth of BILH Philanthropy.
  • Along with Divisional VPs and VPs, facilitate a growing and high-performing individual frontline fundraising team.
  • Primary responsibility is to advance the institution's individual fundraising effort to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward all major gifts prospects and donors and to expand the base fundraising for the institution.
  • Works with the frontline staff to support key capital, clinical, research and educational priorities of the institution.
  • Help to create and implement Capital Campaigns, including helping to set the fundraising priorities, campaign goals, and build the excitement and commitment from the medical leadership, Philanthropy Committees, and other key lay leaders and top donors, and ready the staff for this new intensified focus.
  • Staff a principal gifts portfolio. Devises strategies to cultivate and solicit these prospects and maintain an active schedule of contact.
  • Helps to engage them to their fullest potential as ambassadors and donors to the institution.
  • Oversee the expansion of the major gift prospect base through strategic engagement of caregivers and board members in the identification and cultivation process.
  • In collaboration with Operations and Prospect Research, the VP has oversight of the prospect assignment and discovery process and will assess the effectiveness of this process.
  • Develop and implement strategies to secure transformational gifts ($10M+) at the system and local level by assisting in creating inspirational cases for support for select priorities and advancing prospect engagement strategies.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to local board development efforts related to Governance and Nominating Committee activities, including board effectiveness, best-in-class nominating practices, diversity initiatives, and orientation/education.
  • Advance the effectiveness of philanthropy committees and other engagement vehicles for prospects and potential board talent.
  • Oversee development of annual operating plans and financial goals for individual clinical units/hospitals, along with supporting budget, for review and approval; prepare and present regular updates of fundraising results.
  • Establish and implement appropriate metrics and measurements for staff.
  • Assist in planning, monitoring and/or managing the budget in the functional area of the department as needed.
