About The Position

As a Market Intelligence Decision Scientist, you will help Best Buy understand, quantify, and forecast how external economic and market forces affect consumer behavior, industry dynamics, and company performance, enabling better business decisions and outcomes. You will apply economic theory, statistical modeling, forecasting techniques, and market intelligence frameworks to assess the impact of macroeconomic trends, policy changes, consumer dynamics, and competitive developments on Best Buy's business. Working across Finance, Strategy, Analytics, and Market Intelligence, you will translate complex data into trusted insights, forecasts, and decision-support tools that help Best Buy navigate uncertainty and plan for the future. This role is hybrid, which means you will be required to work on site Monday through Thursday at the Best Buy corporate office in Richfield, Minnesota. You can work virtually from home or another non ‑ Best Buy location on Friday. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Physical Sciences, or related field
  • 1 or more years of experience in analytics, retail, market research, or competitive intelligence.
  • 1 or more years of experience applying analytical techniques to answer business questions
  • 1 or more years of experience leveraging data science and data visualization tools, such as SQL, and/or Python
  • Strong project management skills, capable of balancing multiple priorities and delivering high-quality results on time.
  • Interest in economic data and how it impacts consumer behavior
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs, TNs, etc. will not be considered)

Nice To Haves

  • 1 or more years of experience leveraging data science and data visualization tools, such as Tableau/PowerBI/Looker, SAS, R
  • 1 or more years e xperience working with government data such as labor statistics, consumer spending, housing statistics, consumer surveys, etc.
  • 1 or more years e xperience with advanced analytic techniques including statistical inference, predictive modeling, and big data analytics.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex data into impactful business insights.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain econometric and forecasting models that quantify the impact of macroeconomic conditions on Best Buy's business performance and consumer demand.
  • Leverage economic forecasts (e.g. Moody’s analytics) alongside industry and alternative external data sources to evaluate leading indicators, triangulate future market conditions, and improve visibility into potential business outcomes.
  • Conduct scenario and sensitivity analyses to quantify the impact of changing economic conditions, inform key business trade-offs, and continuously improve forecast accuracy through model refinement, new methodologies, and evolving data sources.
  • Build, update, and maintain analytical platforms for ongoing business economic tracking and reporting (e.g., Executive Monthly Business Review macro scorecard, Investor Relations government sources workbook, and tracking of key economic themes).
  • Monitor economic, industry, and business performance relative to established forecasts and scenarios, identifying meaningful shifts in trends, risks, opportunities, and leading indicators.
  • Deliver actionable economic insights and implications through the collection, analysis, and interpretation of macroeconomic, industry, external, and Best Buy data, helping stakeholders understand what is changing, why it is changing, and the potential impact on future business performance.
  • Develop expertise across a broad portfolio of external and alternative data sources (e.g. credit card spending, market share, consumer surveys & panel data, earnings calls, analyst research) to generate actionable market intelligence.
  • Evaluate how external developments, such as tax refunds, gas prices, tariffs, housing trends, and competitive changes, impact consumer behavior, industry performance, and Best Buy's business.
  • Triangulate insights across multiple data sources and apply market intelligence frameworks, including market and opportunity sizing, value chain analysis, competitive assessments, and scenario planning, to answer emerging business questions and support strategic decision-making.
