About The Position

Wood Mackenzie is seeking a full-time Market Analyst to join its Power Trading Analytics (PTA) team. This team is responsible for research covering North American power market fundamentals, price forecasting, asset valuation, and strategy, producing highly utilized data, reports, and insights. The PTA team's expertise in the North American power market is crucial for clients navigating the energy transition. The ideal candidate will possess a strong analytical background and developing expertise in the power industry. The role involves delivering leading short-term power outlooks using proprietary and public data, and requires individuals who are detail-oriented, intellectually curious, commercially savvy, and comfortable presenting to clients. The candidate should be adept at distilling complex information into simple, actionable analytics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, math, stats, or energy-related discipline.
  • Previous experience in a power or trading vertical.
  • 2+ years of business or professional work experience.
  • Ability to lead and train entry-level associates and analysts.
  • Commitment to contributing to a welcoming and inclusive environment, sensitivity to diverse perspectives, and passion for equity in the workplace.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in using programming languages such as Python, Visual Basic, or comparable languages.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and lead the daily operational tasks with the Market Associate/Analyst group.
  • Ensure high-quality forecasts and analytics are provided to customers from the entire team.
  • Operate models and support tools daily, including spatial, data visualization, and power flow applications, to identify and solve problems in power industry-specific ISO markets.
  • Understand and communicate current-day/next-day operational and financial risk to Asset owners, traders, retailers, etc., to assist them in making asset optimization decisions.
  • Provide insights and risks associated with longer-term congestion patterns, transmission upgrades, and outages through quarterly seasonal outlooks.
  • Take ownership of initiatives related to efficiencies and products outside of routine daily operational tasks.
  • Run regional support workbooks daily and continuously improve the level of granularity provided to the team and customers.
  • Manipulate large datasets to determine correlations and relationships between potential market drivers, prices, and events.
  • Improve current processes by automating critical tasks using macros (visual basic/Python).
  • Present research projects/presentations, memos, or reports on market-relevant topics to the team's ISO desk, lead, managers, and other decision-makers, and advise on the effects of various courses of action relevant to specific problems.
