About The Position

Maine State Ferry is seeking an Engineer and Engineer Assistant for July 2026, with potential to work elsewhere in Seaward Services's fleet as needed after this hitch. The Engineers will work on the Maine State Ferry vessel Philbrook, travelling between Bass Harbor, Swan's Island, and Frenchboro Island. These crew members are responsible for the maintenance and operation of mechanical and hydraulic equipment aboard the vessel. Assistant Engineers are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing equipment, as well as lubricating moving parts of the engine and other machinery. They also assist with firefighting and other emergencies onboard the vessel.

Requirements

  • Assistant Engineers must have DDE 4000 and TWIC
  • Valid Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC)
  • Minimum DD-4000 endorsement
  • Valid TWIC card

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in ship’s technical maintenance and the safe, efficient, economical operation of all her machinery
  • Following all the engine room procedures
  • Assisting in the engineering/technical department jobs
  • Assisting in day to day running of all plant and machinery
  • Performs necessary routine maintenance, repairs, and handles ship’s technical jobs under the direction of the Chief Engineer
  • Stands engine room watch while vessel is underway or as and when deemed necessary
  • Maintaining log of the lube/oil quantities and consumptions
  • Monitoring and analyzing cooling water
  • Assisting to maintain the general condition/maintenance of machineries, steering gear, air conditioning, etc.
  • Keeping engine room watches and carrying out any assigned maintenance jobs
  • Other duties as assigned
