About The Position

HII Elevator Support Unit (ESU) teams provide expert maintenance and repairs on aircraft carriers in support of the ESU contract. The selected Welder candidate will support ESU, working closely with skilled trades teams, onboard ships, and at shore-based facilities. This role involves using various welding processes, mechanical techniques, and related duties to repair, remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment, assisting with repairs, alterations, and installations. This is a full-time position located in Chesapeake, VA, requiring travel to local shipyards and military bases, with per diem, travel, and lodging expenses covered when assigned. Candidates must demonstrate welding ability through qualification testing within the first four weeks for continued employment. The opportunity resides with Global Security (GS), which comprises live, virtual, constructive (LVC) solutions, fleet sustainment, nuclear and environmental services, and Australia business, serving military customers and supporting the U.S. Navy and Department of Energy. Requirements

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of experience in welding and metal fabrication in marine or industrial environments on multiple metal types.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and base access.
  • Must have proficiency in multiple welding positions and processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW) and fabrication of structural and piping systems.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and OEM specifications.
  • Must have the ability to work in Naval Bases / shipyard environments and comply with OSHA, NAVSEA, and program safety requirements.
  • Must have the ability to conduct torch cutting, hammer forging, grinding, sawing, and fitting of metal parts structural and piping systems as required.
  • Must support machinist tasks such as torch heating, flame cutting, and grinding of metal components.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator.
  • Must have basic mechanic knowledge and ability to operate various tools to support additional tasking using tools such as, socket wrenches, standard wrenches, Allen wrenches.
  • Must be proficient in both SMAW and GTAW welding for various materials including Carbon steel, HY/HSLA, Stainless, copper nickel and Monel.
  • Must be able to pass a structural X-Ray Test for SMAW (All-Positions).
  • Must be able to pass a Macro-Etch for thin wall pipe (CUNI, Stainless and Carbon Steel).

  • Experience with other primary and auxiliary shipboard systems.
  • Knowledge of tag out procedures and hot work requirements per OSHA and NAVSEA standards.
  • Familiarity with secure facility protocols and ability to work in classified environments.
  • Any Quality Control or Inspector experience or NDT experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs to maintain and restore various high and low pressure Piping systems, install pipe hangers, and accomplish various installations of structural foundations in support of the ESU contract onboard the ship.
  • Assist in the maintenance, repair, fabricate, and replace various structural components for installed equipment.
  • Apply welding processes including preheating, brazing, bead welding, tack welding, and flame cutting.
  • Provide adequate understanding of the duties of a fire watch and fire extinguishing equipment during welding operations; comply with NAVSEA and OSHA hot work standards.
  • Complete all work in accordance with OEM specifications, NAVSEA Standard Items, and applicable safety requirements.
