About The Position

This opportunity is with Global Security (GS), which focuses on live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) solutions, fleet sustainment, nuclear and environmental services, and Australian business operations. GS is a key partner to military customers, managing the largest LVC enterprise for warfighter preparation. HII has a 40-year history of maintaining and modernizing the U.S. Navy's fleet, offering a holistic approach to maritime defense systems. HII also supports the Department of Energy's national security mission through site management, operation, and cleanup of legacy waste. The Mission Technologies division, specifically the Platform Modernization (PM) Ventilation Modernization Team, seeks a Marine Welder to support alterations and installations for fleet modernization on active class surface ships. This role involves using various welding processes, mechanical techniques, and tools to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment. The position may require weekend and/or overtime hours, and travel to shipyards and military bases locally, nationally, and internationally, with per diem and travel/lodging expenses covered when traveling. Candidates must demonstrate welding ability through X-ray qualification testing within the first three weeks of employment.

Requirements

  • High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience.
  • Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.
  • Must have welding experience with stick welding (SMAW) process in all positions from 2G to 6G for Carbon and Stainless Steel.
  • Must have Aluminum sheet metal and steel structural welding experience with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) processes in all positions from 2G to 6G.
  • Must have working knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction for products to be fabricated and/or installed.
  • Must be able to accurately read and follow welding symbols.
  • Must be able to accurately read measuring devices to 1/16 of an inch.
  • Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures.
  • Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII and host facilities.
  • Must have experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Must be able to travel between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasking.
  • Must provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical/professional certifications.
  • Experience performing welding and structural work aboard naval vessels.
  • Current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248.
  • Shipfitting or sheet metal working experience.
  • Graduated from and/or completed a vocational school, apprenticeship program or a skilled trades certificate program.
  • Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
  • Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
  • Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks, both routine and non-routine, including those outside of specialty, related to shipboard maintenance to meet standards on various contracts at company, customer and/or field locations.
  • Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify structural and ventilation elements and equipment.
  • Lay out and mark points and lines on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.
  • Cut, fit, assemble, and position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.
  • Apply comprehensive understanding of appropriate welding processes (SMAW Steel and GTAW Aluminum) and production to join, surface, fabricate, and repair parts of metal, sheet metal, and other weld-able materials toward completion of assignments.
  • Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
  • Provide guidance and work leadership to less-experienced tradespersons.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
  • Participate in special projects as required.
