About The Position

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the incumbent is responsible for supporting multiple marine training facilities (Fire Training Facility, Town dock, pool) to deliver contract-training programs to the marine industry. This includes oversight for daily operations and general maintenance at all locations; technical and safety specialist support for machinery, equipment and tools; monitoring inventory and ordering/purchasing supplies or equipment as needed; assisting trainers to develop appropriate training scenarios; assisting Part time Trainers and students through demonstration and orientation of specialized equipment; and the setup and dismantling of equipment for all training sessions at all locations.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed a marine emergency duties certificate, NFPA Pre-Service Firefighter certificate or post-secondary certification in paramedic services
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience in the areas of power or marine engineering OR firefighting, paramedic or related OR in a marine emergency duties environment
  • Experience maintaining a wide variety of marine / fire safety equipment
  • Experience in training and demonstrating others on the use of specialized equipment
  • Experience in ordering supplies and inventory management
  • Basic computer skills using the MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Awareness of health and safety rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills
  • Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel ad well as work non-traditional hours

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Transport Canada publications, equipment manuals, SOP, SOLAS, and NFPA regulations would be considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Facility maintenance and operations: Setting up and tear down of equipment in preparation of trainer’s arrival and training sessions
  • Reviewing of safety checklist with all staff prior to training exercises and escalating potential safety issues to Part time Trainers
  • Assisting in the demonstration of proper usage of safety gear (i.e. SCBA masks), refill SCBA air tanks
  • Coordinate the refilling of all Carbon Dioxide, dry chemical and water fire extinguishers nightly to ensure they are ready for training sessions the following morning
  • Troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining a wide variety of equipment.
  • Source and order parts, inventory and new equipment.
  • Exploring and recommending purchase of capital equipment, provide input into facility layout & location of equipment.
  • Owen Sound Harbour Safety Specialist: Setting up of equipment in preparation of trainer’s arrival and training sessions
  • Reviewing of safety checklist with all staff prior to training exercises and escalating potential safety issues to Part time Trainers
  • Assisting in the demonstration of activities ie. Safe life raft usage
  • Preparing and tear down of all equipment following training sessions
  • Maintaining lifeboat, rescue boat and life rafts
  • Pool Safety Specialist: Setting up of equipment in preparation of trainer’s arrival and classes
  • Reviewing of safety checklist with all staff prior to training exercises and escalating potential safety issues to Part time Trainers
  • Assisting in the demonstration of pool activities, monitoring student activity with life rafts etc.
  • Tearing down of all equipment following classes
  • Deflating and repacking all life rafts and coordinate the refilling Carbon dioxide cylinders to ensure they are ready for next training session
  • Acting as the safety specialist during safety sessions
  • Generally maintaining the Centre for Marine Training & Researc
  • Assisting with inventory control by monitoring inventory levels and ordering replenishment of stock items
  • Representing CMTR
  • Monitoring students in the safe use of equipment and ensure all safety standards are being followed
