About The Position

The Marine Technician III performs calibration, testing, and evaluation of marine instrumentation to ensure the accuracy and precision of measurement systems. This position utilizes various measurement and testing equipment in a calibration laboratory setting and performs calibration procedures in accordance with established standards, protocols, and regulatory requirements. The Marine Technician III maintains calibration documentation, troubleshoots equipment performance issues, and performs necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure equipment accuracy and reliability. This position also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate system performance and support calibration operations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Science, Engineering or Electronics Technology or a related field.
  • Two to four (2-4) years of experience working with oceanographic sensors, instrumentation, or equipment.
  • Must be willing to travel for training at vendor locations.
  • Must be a U.S Citizen and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of equipment testing, calibration, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and maintain data related to oceanographic sensor and equipment performance and calibration readiness.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate calibration records, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Knowledge of basic International Organization for Standardization (ISO) procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to support internal and external audits by maintaining complete, accurate, and audit-ready documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Ability to identify equipment performance issues and assist with appropriate adjustments, repairs, or corrective actions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established calibration procedures, technical specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete training specific to calibration equipment operations and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline.
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience working in a calibration laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and keep current all calibration procedures for the newly established USM Calibration Laboratory.
  • Serve as technical expert on calibration requirements for oceanographic sensors and set protocols for all calibration activities.
  • Establish calibration procedures specific to available equipment and future requirements.
  • Lead efforts to establish ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and assure quality processes align with international standards, including International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 17025 and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requirements.
  • Independently determine corrective actions for more complex calibration issues.
  • Accurately records calibration results and maintains detailed records, reports, and supporting documentation related to calibration activities.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions, performance issues, and measurement inaccuracies identified during calibration and testing processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
