About The Position

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking qualified marine painters with at least 1 year of hands-on marine painting work experience. The role requires knowledge of proper coating application methods while maintaining desired MIL thickness. The painter will work in a physically demanding environment, including confined spaces and heights, and will use power tools, hand tools, or chemicals for surface cleaning prior to applying coating systems. This role is crucial for protecting ship components and structural elements from rust, corrosion, marine life, and for enhancing the ship's appearance. Responsibilities include surface preparation, masking, sandblasting, selecting coating application methods, and ensuring suitable curing conditions. The painter may also work with power coating, non-skid, and other special hull treatments. Additionally, the painter must be able to interpret paint schedules, calculate surface areas, estimate material quantities, test paint properties, and perform final quality inspections.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of hands-on Marine painting work experience.
  • Ability to know the proper method for applying coatings while maintaining desired MIL thickness.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment including confined spaces and heights.
  • Ability to use power tools, hand tools, or chemicals to accomplish cleaning of surfaces prior to applying coating systems.
  • Ability to select and apply a wide variety of marine coating systems.
  • Ability to prepare the surface, mask unpainted areas, and sandblast surfaces.
  • Ability to select the methods of coating application and provide suitable curing conditions.
  • Ability to work with power coating, non-skid, and other special hull treatments.
  • Ability to interpret paint schedules.
  • Ability to calculate surface areas.
  • Ability to estimate the amount of materials required.
  • Ability to test the grade, viscosity and fineness of the paint.
  • Ability to perform final quality inspections.
  • Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
  • Must be able to pass physical agility test.
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform overhead work.
  • Must be able to work at extreme heights.
  • Must be able to perform work outdoors, year-round, in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in small, tight, confined spaces.
  • Must be able to take measurements or be willing to learn.
  • Must be willing to work in radiation areas, but with the appropriate training and equipment.
  • Must be able to be clean shaven to wear a respirator.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be willing to work any shift.
  • Must provide up to 7 years of work history (if applicable) and all relevant paint experienced.
