About The Position

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking qualified marine painters with at least 1 year of hands-on marine painting work experience. The role involves applying coatings while maintaining desired MIL thickness, working in physically demanding environments including confined spaces and heights, and using various tools and chemicals for surface preparation. Painters are responsible for selecting and applying a wide variety of marine coating systems to protect ship components and structural elements from rust, corrosion, marine life, and to enhance appearance. This includes surface preparation, masking, sandblasting, selecting application methods, and ensuring suitable curing conditions. The role may also involve working with power coating, non-skid, and other special hull treatments. Additionally, painters must be able to interpret paint schedules, calculate surface areas, estimate material quantities, test paint properties, and perform final quality inspections.

Requirements

  • Ability to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces.
  • Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Must take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Ability to work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Ability to work indoors/outdoors year round.
  • Ability to pass a Physical Agility Test.
  • Minimum of 2+ years paint experience.
  • Ability to work any of our 3 shifts.
  • Provide up to 7 years of work history (if applicable) and all relevant paint experienced.

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Apply coatings while maintaining desired MIL thickness.

  • Select and apply a wide variety of marine coating systems.
  • Prepare surfaces, mask unpainted areas, and sandblast surfaces.
  • Select methods of coating application and provide suitable curing conditions.
  • Work with power coating, non-skid, and other special hull treatments.
  • Interpret paint schedules, calculate surface areas, and estimate material quantities.
  • Test the grade, viscosity, and fineness of the paint.
  • Perform final quality inspections.
