About The Position

Structural Mechanical Systems (SMS) is seeking a skilled and motivated Marine Outside Machinist to join our growing ship repair and industrial maintenance team in Portsmouth, VA. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical equipment and systems aboard naval, commercial, or industrial vessels. This position is ideal for candidates with shipyard, Navy, maritime, or heavy industrial experience who are committed to safety, precision, and quality workmanship. SMS specializes in marine and industrial repair, fabrication, pumps, valves, hydraulic systems, and crane systems.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience as a Marine Outside Machinist, Industrial Mechanic, or similar role
  • Shipyard or maritime industry experience preferred
  • Experience with pumps, valves, hydraulics, and mechanical systems strongly preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical documents
  • Knowledge of precision measuring tools and alignment procedures
  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel when required
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and perform physically demanding tasks
  • Must be able to pass background checks, drug screening, and site access requirements

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or NAVSEA certifications are a plus
  • Navy ship repair experience
  • Pump and valve overhaul experience
  • Hydraulic system maintenance
  • Rigging and equipment alignment
  • Crane maintenance or industrial machinery repair
  • Experience working in fast-paced shipyard environments

Responsibilities

  • Install, align, troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair marine machinery and mechanical systems
  • Maintain and repair pumps, valves, piping systems, hydraulic systems, and rotating equipment
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work specifications
  • Perform precision measurements using micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and alignment tools
  • Remove and reinstall mechanical components including motors, pumps, compressors, and gear assemblies
  • Conduct inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance on marine equipment
  • Work aboard ships, in shipyards, dry docks, and industrial facilities
  • Collaborate with welders, pipefitters, electricians, and supervisors to complete projects safely and efficiently
  • Follow OSHA, NAVSEA, and company safety standards at all times
  • Complete required documentation and work reports accurately and on schedule
