Under direct supervision, assists the Marine Engineer in the operation, maintenance and repair of motor ferry operation, auxiliary, and related equipment at the Staten Island Ferry; performs related work. This role involves maintaining appropriate levels of oil and lubricant in various engines and equipment, operating and cleaning filtration systems, greasing and lubricating machinery, and assisting with repairs and maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment. The position also includes cleaning and painting compartments, inspecting emergency equipment, participating in fire drills, and reporting findings and unusual situations to supervisors. Additionally, the Marine Oiler is responsible for pumping sludge, performing periodic inspections of auxiliary machinery, examining the hull for leaks and damage, using bilge pumps, and assisting with stern tube packing and standby equipment maintenance. Fueling duties and maintaining potable water tanks are also part of the responsibilities. Medical guidelines established by the U.S. Coast Guard apply, requiring medical examinations and drug screenings. A Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be maintained throughout employment.
