About The Position

This recruitment will be posted for a minimum of five (5) business days and will remain posted on a continuous basis until the needs of the Department are met. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply immediately. Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, subject to appropriate authorization. This recruitment is being held to establish an Open Eligible List, which can be used to fill current and future Marine Mechanic positions, as well as similar and/or lower-level classifications. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is a large organization providing law enforcement services focused on public safety. The Harbor Patrol/Marine Operations Bureau provides law enforcement, marine firefighting, and search/rescue services along the Orange County coastline and harbors. The Marine Operations fleet consists of fireboats and patrol boats, which are maintained "in-house" by skilled marine mechanics and craftsmen. The maintenance staff includes one supervisor, four marine mechanics, two marine painters, and one marine carpenter. The Marine Mechanics perform journey-level work in installing, maintaining, and repairing marine inboard and outboard gasoline engines and propulsion equipment, as well as maintaining and repairing fire pumps and other mechanical equipment.

Requirements

  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test.
  • Background screening includes prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification.
  • Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Services (N.A.C.E.S).
  • Ability to stand, reach, bend, stoop, and perform strenuous physical/manual labor.
  • Ability to walk up/down uneven terrain/irregular surfaces/hills.
  • Upper body strength to lift/push/pull/carry up to 50 pound objects.
  • Vision sufficient to read standard text.
  • Ability to drive vehicles requiring a Class B license with passenger endorsement.
  • Speak and hear well enough in a noisy environment to communicate clearly and understandably in person, over the telephone and in small groups.
  • Manual dexterity to write.
  • Able to swim and perform ocean sea tests in Harbor Patrol vessels.
  • Stamina to work outdoors in varied climates and exposed to weather, noise, pollens, dust, fumes, birds, noise, and vibration.
  • Ability to work on floating docks and moving vessels.

Nice To Haves

  • More than five (5) years of experience in installing, maintaining and repairing marine inboard gasoline engines, propulsion equipment, transmissions, steering systems, and outboards.
  • Completed service training schools from one or more of the following: Mercury Marine, Crusader Marine, or Yamaha outboards.
