About The Position

A Marine Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of various types of marine vessels and their systems, primarily within a workshop environment. This includes engines (inboard and outboard), electrical systems, steering, propulsion, hydraulics, and other mechanical and electrical components. The goal is to ensure boats and other watercraft operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The role also involves assisting the Port Engineer/Assistant Port Engineer in all matters related to shipboard operation and maintenance, supervising engineers on board during docked maintenance, and providing instructions for preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance. The mechanic will also be responsible for quality control of spare parts and materials, maintaining important documents and records, and planning future maintenance.

Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years of engine room sea time / Experience as a marine mechanic, according with STCW.
  • Strong technical knowledge of marine engines, electrical systems, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals and schematics.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work in various positions.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of vessel repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to repair marine equipment on site under adverse conditions.
  • Availability to work over time and weekend.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with vessel operations.
  • Valid TWIC or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues in marine engines and systems using various tools and techniques.
  • Performing routine maintenance like oil changes and system checks.
  • Repairing or replacing damaged parts in various systems such as propulsion, anchoring, electrical, and HVAC.
  • Testing and tuning engines for optimal performance.
  • Conducting sea trials to confirm repairs and safety standards.
  • Maintaining detailed records of work and parts used.
  • Communicating with Port Engineer / Assistant Port Engineer about repairs and maintenance.
  • Managing the workshop, including organizing, stocking, ordering parts, and ensuring proper disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Adhering to safety and environmental regulations, including OSHA protocols.
  • Supervising Engineers on board while vessel is docked, during maintenance performed to machineries equipment in accordance with manuals and instructions.
  • Giving instructions for preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance in the engine room personally if necessary.
  • Understanding the condition of the engine and performing opening-up inspections of various parts of the engine.
  • Paying particular attention to the accuracy of measuring instruments.
  • Personally supervising opening-up or repairs of important parts of the engine, under instructions and directions of Port Engineer/Assistant Port Engineer.
  • Quality control of spare parts, materials and other goods received.
  • Helping Engineer officers to maintain important documents, drawings and other records.
  • Planning maintenance and preparing descriptions of work to be done next time the ship is being docked.
  • Informing the Port Engineer / Assistant Port Engineer of any defects or any matters that may give rise to problems in relation to machinery or machinery-related installations.
