About The Position

The NC Department of Transportation's Marine Maintenance Unit conducts a variety of tasks including dredging, the installation, repair and maintenance of pilings, replacement of channel markers, construction and subsequent maintenance of dredge material placement sites, and the repair and maintenance of ramp and gantry systems at each NCDOT ferry terminal along the coast. This position is responsible for assisting tasks in several different areas including dredging, piling repair and maintenance, ramp repair and maintenance, and maintenance of support vessels. Dredging work activities can include assisting in dredge pipeline assembly by fusing, coupling, and aligning new pipes for floating pipelines, shorelines, and dredge discharge lines in support of dredge operations. Perform activities such as monitoring areas while active dredging is occurring, spill gate installation and maintenance, and material placement area dewatering activities. Piling work activities can include assisting with the operation of tools and equipment for the installation and assembly of dolphin structures consisting of steel tubes, wooden piles, wire rope, fenders, and hardware. Ramp and gantry work activities can include assisting with the cylinder replacement, cable changes, block replacements, painting of decks, by utilizing manlifts, hand tools, crane barge, and other associated materials and equipment. Work involves considerable exposure to the natural elements and taxing manual work from small boats or pontoons. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Marine Maintenance Master and is reviewed through observation of duties performed.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of dredges, cranes, tugs, and related support equipment
  • Knowledge of the operations, maintenance, and repairs of ramps and gantry systems of different types including hydraulic cylinders and counterweights.
  • Knowledge of dolphin repair and replacement procedures
  • Skill in the use of quick-coupling flanged pipelines and the securing of float
  • May require National Crane Operator certification, U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing certification, and a Class A CDL.
