About The Position

The Marine Estimator is responsible for preparing labor and material estimates for assigned projects, creating detailed cost estimates for various ship and boat repair contracts. This role involves managing multiple proposals simultaneously, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of estimates, and monitoring expenditures against estimates to identify risks and problem areas. The position requires a strong understanding of ship repair procedures, government contracts, and relevant industry standards.

Requirements

Highly organized with the ability to monitor numerous projects.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related programs.
Ability to learn other accounting software systems.
Excellent attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate well with technical subjects.
Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field with 3+ years of experience OR a High School Diploma and 3 years of related experience.
Extensive knowledge of ship repair procedures, requirements, terminology, and government contracts.
Strong understanding of U.S. Navy Standard Items, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rules and their differences.
Ability to maintain confidential and meticulous records.
Ability to take directions and follow instructions.
Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
Ability to work on a variety of assignments on a daily or hourly basis.
Strong ability to be dependable, and work as a team.
Ability to communicate effectively in English.

Responsibilities

Preparing bid documents, schedules, and reviewing all project documents and work plans.
Managing multiple proposals simultaneously while meeting stringent schedule requirements.
Ensuring estimates are accurate, reasonable, and completed in a timely manner.
Estimating labor and material costs and ensuring efficient use.
Monitoring estimates and actual expenditures to identify weak points, problem areas, and mitigate risks.
Qualifying vendors to ensure they meet contractual requirements.
Soliciting and evaluating price quotations from subcontractors, and accounting for any exceptions.
Submitting inquiries to customers for clarification of requirements.
Determining long lead time material and potential impacts to schedule.
Estimating for navy small boats, commercial boats, and large yachts.
Interpreting drawings, technical data, and specifications to determine material and equipment requirements.
Maintaining confidential and meticulous records.
Taking directions and following instructions.
Performing work accurately and thoroughly.
Working on a variety of assignments on a daily or hourly basis.
Communicating effectively in English.
