About The Position

Boston Marine Services is seeking an experienced Marine Mechanic to perform diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and installation of diesel and gasoline-powered marine propulsion systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong troubleshooting skills and hands-on experience with inboard, sterndrive, outboard, and generator systems. This role is focused on mechanical systems and propulsion equipment rather than general boatyard trades. The Marine Mechanic will be responsible for ensuring vessels are maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance. Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining marine diesel and gasoline propulsion systems required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diesel and gasoline marine engines.
  • Ability to interpret service manuals and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with marine electrical systems related to engine operation.
  • Experience using diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting tools.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain marine diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Perform engine inspections and preventative maintenance services.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel, cooling, and exhaust system issues.
  • Utilize manufacturer diagnostic software and testing equipment.
  • Repair or replace engine components
  • Perform engine alignments and drive-line inspections.
  • Conduct dockside testing and sea trials to diagnose issues and verify repairs.
  • Service and repair inboard engines, stern drives, outboard engines, shaft systems, transmissions, V-drives, pods and propulsion controls.
  • Diagnose vibration, performance, and drive-line issues.
  • Perform propeller and running gear inspections.
  • Diagnose and repair marine generators.
  • Service fuel systems, filtration systems, and cooling systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance on hydraulic and mechanical vessel systems.
  • Perform winterization and spring commissioning.
  • Perform engine and generator service.
  • Perform fluid changes and maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct vessel inspections and sea trials.
  • Complete service reports and work orders accurately.
  • Record labor, parts usage, and recommendations.
  • Communicate findings and repair options to service advisors and customers.
  • Collaborate with service technicians and project managers.
  • Assist with hauling, launching, and vessel movements when required.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and communicate professionally with customers.
