About The Position

Under the supervision of a Sergeant or other command officer, patrols Monroe County’s waterways in order to enforce state and local boating laws and regulations, investigate marine-related criminal activities, and police boating accident scenes. Responds to emergencies, water rescue and recovery operations, and public safety incidents. Involves the performance of hazardous and strenuous tasks, often in rough weather conditions, requiring the exercise of initiative and judgment in various situations endangering life or property.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must possess a valid operator’s license.
  • Will be screened for the use of illegal controlled substances after a conditional offer of employment.
  • Must possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation.
  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Pre-Boat inspection procedures
  • Engine Start, Operation and End of Shift procedures
  • Knot tying
  • Docking and Vessel Handling
  • Vessel Electronics Operation
  • Knowledge of Waterway and Navigation Hazards
  • Navigation rules and GPS/ Chart Plotter use
  • Safe Operation in Rough Weather Conditions
  • Water Rescue Response
  • Vessel stops
  • Radio Use
  • Must be in good physical condition such as to permit lifting and carrying of objects or persons, standing, walking or running for extended periods of time.
  • Position requires reaching, sitting, talking, walking, hearing, seeing, standing, kneeling, crawling, and handling large amounts of weight.
  • Ability to enter and access information from a computer.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of 7 years of boating experience.
  • Strong knowledge of vessel operation and marine safety.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and flexible seasonal schedules.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills.
