About The Position

The Bellingham Public School District is seeking a Marching Band Percussion Coach for Bellingham High School. This is a stipend position responsible for directing and supervising appropriate activities for the percussion section, including practice sessions, games, performances, parades, pep rallies, and school events. The coach will work closely with the Marching Band Director to establish performance standards, select and develop percussion literature, and foster student excellence through individual and group instruction. Responsibilities include maintaining student behavior, supervising students before and during activities, keeping attendance records, attending all required practices and performances, maintaining percussion equipment, and assisting with shows. The coach must adhere to school policies and complete a post-season summary report.

Requirements

  • Experience and background in music and marching techniques.
  • Experience as a percussionist in a variety of styles and fundamental percussion techniques.
  • Dedication to the service of youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate favorably with students.

Responsibilities

  • Directing and supervising appropriate activities such as practice sessions, games, performances, parades, pep rallies and school events and meetings.
  • Working in a positive manner with the Marching Band Director to determine performance standards required for percussion section members.
  • Working with the Marching Band Director to select and develop percussion fundamental exercises, rudiments and literature for performances such as cadences, grooves and drumline featured selections.
  • Encouraging excellence in the performance level of all band students through individual and small group practice sessions, application of sound music theory and technique, and positive instructional techniques.
  • Establishing and maintaining standards of pupil behavior, to provide an orderly productive environment for all band related activities.
  • Being present at least 15 minutes before students report for a practice or performance to supervise students and prepare for rehearsal.
  • Maintaining necessary attendance records and paperwork.
  • Attending marching percussion practice sessions, marching band rehearsals and performances including but not limited to: August rehearsals, Fall marching band rehearsals, Fall marching band performances at football games, Bellingham Memorial Parade on the Sunday before Memorial Day (Sunday, May 17, 2026) and other dates as listed in the Marching Band Handbook.
  • Assuming responsibility for the facility or area in which assigned activity is conducted at all times students are present.
  • Maintaining percussion equipment and instruments, assist with fitting drum harnesses, tuning of marching drums, mallets and sticks.
  • Assisting the Marching Band Director and Color Guard coaches with shows and performances.
  • Completing a post-season summary and report for reflection and goal setting for the future.
  • Adhering to the adopted policies of the Bellingham School Committee.
