About The Position

Responsible for moderately complex engineering projects, coordinating work to ensure objectives in terms of quality, cost, and time are met. This role involves preparing project schedules, reviewing cost estimates, and writing appropriation requests. The engineer will be responsible for effective communication of engineering information among team members and will follow Pella’s Safety, Quality, Project Management & Continuous Improvement Systems. The position may supervise assigned technical team members and serve as a resource, providing technical information and engineering recommendations. The role contributes to project identification and definition, develops, implements, and/or supports assigned technologies, products, and processes, and undertakes other projects as assigned by a supervisor. While primarily an individual contributor, the engineer is capable of leading technical projects and may supervise non-exempt and hourly employees. The position requires proven experience beyond education to support and deliver high-quality products and processes through the application of engineering principles, exhibiting competency and developing expertise in multiple engineering technologies. Work may involve conventional practice with complex features like conflicting design requirements or incomplete market requirements, and requires independent evaluation, selection, and application of engineering principles to product and process modifications. The engineer will exercise independent judgment to define project objectives and the engineering/scientific approach, with assignments potentially requiring the development of unclear objectives and investigation of multiple variables.

Requirements

  • 3+ years combined engineering experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Math, or relevant Science or combination of education and experience.
  • Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD & CMMS required.
  • Competency within multiple disciplines or technologies.
  • Pella Project Management.
  • Periodically exposed to machinery where safe operating procedures must be followed, occasional lifting of materials up to 30 lbs. is required, work environment is noisy.

  • Pella CI Certification & Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Technical leader who coordinates the activities of the maintenance department functions in the assigned plant(s) to ensure customer service expectations are met with regards to production and facility equipment reliability and availability.
  • Manages maintenance activities to ensure that all personnel are utilized efficiently and effectively.
  • Manages monthly and annual budget and delivers on cost objectives.
  • Improve, update, and modify manufacturing processes and equipment to deliver safety, quality, customer service, and productivity objectives.
  • Tracks and monitors key project metrics to ensure short and long-term expectations are met.
  • Receives direction from the Plant Engineering Team Leader and/or other members of the plant management staff.
  • The scope of influence of this position spans manufacturing, engineering, Lean, Quality, IT, material and machine vendors.
  • Influential leadership skills are necessary.
  • The ability to effectively present information, defend a position and address concerns is key.
  • The position is expected to understand and proactively apply safe practices in line with Pella’s safety policies.
  • May directly supervise 10-30 technical employees.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and developing employees; directing work; appraising performance, and serving team member needs.
  • Prepares project schedules and reviews cost estimates.
  • Compiles required cost and equipment information, and writes appropriation requests.
  • Responsible for effective communication of engineering information among team members.
  • Follows the structure of Pella’s Safety, Quality, Project Management & Continuous Improvement Systems from concept through project execution.
  • May supervise assigned technical team members and coordinates their work within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Serves as a resource to others as assigned, providing technical information and engineering recommendations that assist with projects.
  • Contributes to project identification and definition.
  • Develops, implements and/or supports assigned technologies, products, and processes.
  • Responsible for other projects as assigned by supervisor.

  • Assignments may require development of unclear objectives and require investigation of multiple variables.
