About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for supporting Vollrath Operations with a focus on process definition and continuous improvement. This role involves collecting and analyzing production and quality data, conducting engineering analysis, problem-solving, work cell layout, cost/capital analysis, project management, creating technical specifications, and applying lean practices. The position requires supporting specified manufacturing lines with daily sustaining work, including throughput and quality improvements, recommendations for capital improvements, and participation in New Product Development (NPD). The engineer will establish and maintain documentation for work cell design, equipment specifications, shop floor work instructions, and routings. Advanced problem-solving techniques, including statistical methods, will be utilized for complex assignments. The role also includes designing, specifying, and supervising the installation of equipment, training maintenance staff and operators, establishing safety measures, identifying profit improvement opportunities through automation and process analysis, and developing programs to meet company objectives. This position requires strong project management skills, leadership in lean events, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision while maintaining effective cross-functional relationships. Collaboration in quality improvement, scrap reduction, and warranty reduction teams is expected, as is conferring with Design Engineering on product design and tooling for efficient production, and consulting with vendors for equipment and material specifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field; preferably a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Solid technical skills.
  • Strong aptitude for problem solving.
  • Demonstrated experience working within and supporting a quality system.
  • Excellent project organization and leadership skills, detail oriented.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter with a strong “sense of urgency”.
  • Ability to work both independently and with cross functional teams.
  • Familiar with lean practices.
  • Experienced in successful product launches participating via a new product development (NPD) process.
  • Candidates without a 4 year technical degree can be considered if they possess the minimum demonstrated 10+ years of successful experience in Operations or in a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or Business preferred.
  • Background in metal forming, tooling, and assembly line production is desirable.
  • 7+ years of experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support specified Vollrath manufacturing lines with daily sustaining work, including throughput improvements, quality improvements, and recommendations for capital improvements.
  • Participate in New Product Development (NPD).
  • Establish and maintain documentation for work cell design, equipment specifications, shop floor work instructions, and routings.
  • Apply advanced problem-solving techniques, including statistical methods, to complex assignments.
  • Design, specify, and supervise the installation of equipment and machinery.
  • Train maintenance staff and operators on new equipment and expected product flow.
  • Establish safety measures for equipment and work cells.
  • Identify areas for profit improvement through automation, methods/flow analysis, and motion economy.
  • Develop programs and approaches to achieve profit improvement objectives.
  • Gather facts, develop solutions, make and sell recommendations, and follow through on implementation.
  • Facilitate and lead large, complex project teams.
  • Lead and/or participate in lean events.
  • Lead and/or participate in quality improvement, scrap reduction, or warranty reduction teams.
  • Confer with Design Engineering concerning product design and tooling for efficient production methods.
  • Consult with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluate products according to specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
