Manufacturing Engineer (overnight shift)

Somafina•Lindon, UT
•$65,000 - $85,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer applies engineering fundamentals, root cause analysis, production data, and hands-on problem-solving to Somafina’s Lindon production operations during the overnight shift. This is a hands-on production-floor role focused on diagnosing equipment and process issues, running experiments to improve throughput and quality, and converting findings into durable process changes. The role works directly with the Plant Manager and has a dotted-line relationship to the VP & General Manager, providing broad visibility and influence. It is intended for an early-career engineer with strong analytical instincts, a fast learning curve, and curiosity about manufacturing processes. Direct experience in gummy or nutraceutical manufacturing is a plus but is not required; the company will teach the product. The role offers a growth path toward senior manufacturing engineering or plant leadership as the engineer develops a track record. The position is based at Somafina’s Lindon, Utah facility and works 6:00 PM–6:30 AM. The schedule alternates every other week between Monday–Wednesday with four days off and Monday–Thursday with three days off. The role is full-time and exempt.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, or another Engineering discipline is strongly preferred; other technical or quantitative degrees will be considered.
  • Strong fundamentals in root cause analysis, process thinking, and data-driven problem-solving; prior manufacturing experience is not required.
  • Comfort working with production data and basic statistical tools such as Excel.
  • Exceptional judgment, critical thinking, and analytical ability, including an interest in diagnosing complex, ambiguous operational problems.
  • Hands-on mindset and comfort working on the production floor.
  • Self-motivated, highly coachable, and eager to learn manufacturing processes and equipment from the ground up.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical findings to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • English proficiency.
  • Able to spend extended time on the production floor, including standing, walking, and moving through manufacturing areas.
  • Able to use sight, hearing, touch, and smell to identify equipment and process issues.
  • Able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds in a manufacturing environment.
  • Available and able to work 6:00 PM–6:30 AM, maintaining alertness and focus during overnight operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to Minitab or JMP.
  • Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous-improvement methodologies.
  • Experience in gummy, nutraceutical, or consumer goods manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Own technical troubleshooting for Lindon production operations during the overnight shift, using root cause analysis to diagnose equipment failures, process variation, and quality issues.
  • Design and run process-improvement experiments, such as changes to changeover time, equipment settings, and line balancing, and validate results with production data before implementing changes.
  • Partner with the Plant Manager and maintain a dotted-line relationship with the VP & General Manager to prioritize and resolve production bottlenecks and process inefficiencies.
  • Analyze production metrics, including throughput, downtime, scrap, and efficiency, to identify trends, quantify improvement opportunities, and track the impact of engineering changes.
  • Develop a deep technical understanding of manufacturing equipment, systems, and product-specific production methods.
  • Write and revise SOPs, work instructions, and technical documentation to capture improvements and support consistent execution.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance, calibration, and minor engineering changes with Maintenance and Quality teams.
  • Train and coach production staff on new procedures and process changes, translating technical concepts for non-engineering audiences.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards, including GMP and OSHA, across engineering and process changes.
  • Take on increasing technical scope and ownership over time, with a growth path toward senior manufacturing engineering or plant leadership.
  • Perform work safely and in accordance with OSHA standards.
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement on the production floor.
  • Contribute to team efforts by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Perform other job-related tasks and responsibilities as requested by leadership; duties may change according to company needs.
