Manufacturing Engineer - SWORD

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL

About The Position

This hands-on role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance, and provides manufacturing and supply-chain support across Blue Origin facilities. The engineer collaborates with engineering and planning teams to support the design, development, and delivery of complex hardware, tools, and development products. The team works with a rapid iterative development mindset and expects members to contribute directly to manufacturing when needed. The role champions manufacturing build processes with internal customers, provides design-for-manufacturing guidance, reviews and approves manufacturing drawings, authors work instructions, and identifies process capabilities needed to meet critical schedules. It also supports repair and rework, designs tooling and fixtures, and manages evolving requirements during builds. Applicants must be eligible under U.S. export-control rules. Physical demands include supporting manufacturing and fabrication floor activities, climbing stairs, working in small areas, and lifting and carrying 40 pounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of experience in a manufacturing environment for complex products, such as aerostructures, space systems, aerospace products, avionics subsystems, aircraft assemblies, medical devices, or semiconductor equipment.
  • Experience with PLM and MES enterprise products.
  • Experience authoring work-order instructions, SOPs, process-flow maps, or similar documentation.
  • Working knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes and how to assess their applicability, including machining, welding, waterjets, coatings, additive manufacturing, precision cleaning, assembly, inspection, and metrology.
  • Experience planning sequences of manufacturing processes to produce feature-rich detail parts or complex subassemblies.
  • Demonstrated success in a constantly evolving environment; ability to work with incomplete information and pivot to drive progress.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and contribute hands-on to manufacturing as needed.
  • Consistent manufacturing experience directly related to part machining.
  • Understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing fundamentals, including working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Strong written, interpersonal, technical, and software skills, including CAD, scheduling, issue tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong customer focus and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with teams across large geographic distances.
  • Proficiency in CAD.
  • U.S. citizenship or nationality, U.S. permanent residency, or lawful admission to the U.S. as a refugee or grant of asylum, as required by export-control regulations.
  • Physical ability to support manufacturing and fabrication floor activities, climb stairs, work in small areas, and lift and carry 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a rapid development environment.
  • Experience in an aerospace manufacturing facility.
  • Experience with Siemens NX (Designcenter).
  • Experience with Siemens Teamcenter and Opcenter.
  • Experience with manufacturing operations management (MOM) enterprise products, preferably Siemens Opcenter APS, for scheduling critical-timeline manufacturing operations.
  • Broad experience with manufacturing processes such as welding, assembly, integration, instrumentation, cleaning, non-destructive testing, leak testing, fabrication, and machining.
  • Tooling and fixture design experience.
  • Hands-on experience with machining, familiarity with CNC programming, welding, or additive manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering teams during hardware design, development, and delivery.
  • Work cross-functionally with planner/scheduler team members to deliver complex engineered products and tools to internal customers accurately and on time.
  • Champion build processes with internal customers, challenge requirements, and manage manufacturing plans for development hardware and tooling.
  • Provide design-for-manufacturing guidance and advise on build requirements, process sequencing, engineering requirements, industry standards, GD&T, materials, and inspection.
  • Review engineering drawings and provide final approval for manufacturing complex parts and assemblies.
  • Author work-order instructions that identify key processes and outline manufacturing order of operations.
  • Balance technical detail with simplified processes and instructions for downstream manufacturing.
  • Identify manufacturing processes and capabilities that support critical schedules.
  • Define and support repair and rework activities.
  • Design tooling and fixtures to facilitate manufacturing.
  • Engineer solutions and manage mid-build requirement updates for the team as needed.
  • Contribute hands-on to manufacturing and development efforts as required.
