Manufacturing Engineer III

Blue Origin•Space Coast, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations and supports the Advanced Concepts & Enterprise Engineering business unit. The Manufacturing Engineering team provides technical solutions across multiple early-stage development programs, setting manufacturing operations direction for vehicle and subsystem-level architectures and ensuring concepts are manufacturable from inception. The team represents manufacturing, supply chain, test, and other operations support functions from initial concept through preliminary design definition, emphasizing planning, trade studies, and architecture development before hardware builds begin. The position serves as the manufacturing technical focal for assigned subsystems and/or Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) activities. It supports engineering demonstrators, test articles, and prototype hardware through hands-on fabrication, assembly, and testing, while developing manufacturing strategies and artifacts and influencing design and program decisions. The role requires making strategic recommendations with limited data and may involve extended hours to support critical milestones. Location is Cape Canaveral, Florida, or Kent, Washington. Relocation is provided, travel is expected up to 20%, and interviews include a technical assessment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong understanding of the component and system development lifecycle from concept through production.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, set strategic direction for manufacturing solutions, and apply project management skills to coordinate activities across multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience planning and supporting R&D hardware builds, including defining or reviewing design requirements, authoring manufacturing work instructions, managing bills of materials (BOMs), documenting processes, and resolving non-conformances/RCCA.
  • Proven success influencing design requirements and developing manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with CAD systems such as NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks, and PLM tools.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience presenting to senior leadership, and ability to earn trust and maintain positive professional relationships.
  • Flexibility to support critical milestones, which may require extended hours.

Nice To Haves

  • 7 or more years of experience in aerospace, defense, or similarly complex manufacturing environments.
  • Spacecraft or launch vehicle integration experience and demonstrated technical expertise in one or more of the following: Fluids/Propulsion Systems, Harnessing, Electrical Power Systems, Thermal Protection Systems, Environmental Control and Life Support Systems, Integrated Vehicle Test, or MGSE/EGSE.
  • Experience in technical leadership roles, with or without direct reports.
  • On-site R&D or prototype experience establishing novel manufacturing processes, tooling, fixturing, or GSE, and ensuring producible designs through DFX principles.
  • Experience developing or maintaining subsystem or AI&T artifacts in hardware development programs.
  • Project management experience, training, and/or certification such as PMP or Agile.
  • Strong knowledge of aerospace manufacturing processes and assembly.
  • Knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and/or other quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the manufacturing technical focal for assigned subsystems and/or Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) activities, establish manufacturing plans for vehicle architectures, and present solutions to leadership.
  • Plan for and support builds of engineering demonstrators, test articles, and prototype hardware, including hands-on fabrication, assembly, and testing to validate manufacturing approaches.
  • Drive Design for Excellence (DFX) principles, conduct producibility assessments, support trade studies, and develop roadmaps to bridge manufacturing technology gaps.
  • Develop manufacturing artifacts, including Production Readiness Level assessments, manufacturing management plans, build strategies, facility capacity plans, and tooling designs.
  • Partner with Program Management, Design Engineering, and Operations support teams to identify manufacturing risks, establish mitigation plans, and influence design and programmatic decisions.
  • Mentor engineers, challenge teams to question requirements and identify elegant solutions, and foster a culture of integrity and continuous improvement.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
