Manufacturing Engineer II, Stage Machining

Relativity Space•Long Beach, CA

About The Position

The Stage Manufacturing team builds Terran R’s primary structures and develops the systems and processes used to manufacture them. The Manufacturing Engineer II shares ownership of operations across large 3-axis and 5-axis mills and a vertical turning lathe (VTL). The role helps introduce new products to these machines, improve existing high-volume work, establish machining work centers, and standardize manufacturing processes. The engineer works closely with design, manufacturing, and reliability engineers, production teams, technicians, and external vendors. The position also supports the shop floor through real-time issue resolution and provides design-for-manufacturing feedback during development, prototyping, and flight builds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, aeronautical, mechanical engineering, or another engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive and related experience.
  • 3D and 2D design and drafting skills per ASME Y14.5M; NX preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with engineering and manufacturing groups to understand process constraints and provide design inputs for improved manufacturability.
  • Direct experience with CNC milling and turning operations across multiple materials.
  • Understanding of machine programming (G-code) and machine setup.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in statics, mechanics of materials, process improvement and factory design, fastening and joining, and machining.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive experience with CNC milling, turning, and drilling operations across multiple materials.
  • Aluminum experience and experience with large parts greater than 6 feet.
  • Extensive experience designing work holding for complicated machining operations.
  • Successful introduction of an aerospace hardware system into a manufacturing, test, and production system.
  • Experience managing projects in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Share ownership of operations on two large 3-axis mills, two large 5-axis mills, and a VTL.
  • Help introduce new products to machining equipment and improve current high-volume work.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and reliability engineers, internal production teams, and external vendors.
  • Create work instructions, specifications, and best practices for multiple high-fidelity processes.
  • Help standardize processes across the manufacturing team.
  • Help establish new machining work centers by defining and championing the tooling and processes needed to build Terran R parts.
  • Support the shop floor through live issue resolution and provide upstream feedback as manufacturing technology develops.
  • Provide Design for Manufacturing feedback to structures teams during development, through the first prototype, and through the flight build.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • Generous PTO and sick leave policy.
