Manufacturing Engineer I

Leonardo•Philadelphia, PA

About The Position

The Aerospace Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for understanding aircraft mechanical and avionics systems and coordinating each phase of aircraft production, from work-order analysis through final delivery. The role supports production sequencing, work instructions, tooling design, improvement initiatives, technical troubleshooting, and communication with internal and external stakeholders. It also provides guidance across departments—including Operations, Procurement, Material Planning, Program Management, Design, Quality, and Industrial Engineering—to help achieve an efficient helicopter build cycle. The position contributes to the design, manufacture, and testing of aircraft and aerospace products. It assesses proposed projects for safety and feasibility, evaluates designs against flight-safety principles and customer requirements, and supports cost optimization. Work includes research, coordination with other programs to identify commonality, collaboration with purchasing and vendors, and creating master bills of material that include the tooling needed for production. The engineer also communicates with departments and external vendors to coordinate subassembly production and explain blueprint requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Aerospace, Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of work experience in an aerospace environment or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of FAA certification requirements and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Good informatics skills.
  • Program management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.

Nice To Haves

  • EASA certification knowledge is a plus.
  • Familiarity with aerospace mechanical, flight-control, communication and navigation, engine, hydraulic, and fuel systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma and lean manufacturing is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Italian or Polish is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze company work orders to plan current and future aircraft configurations.
  • Manage aircraft build costs by making make-or-buy decisions and determining whether work should be outsourced based on opportunity and capability.
  • Establish long-term production bill-of-material business plans for five-year lookahead activities.
  • Define manufacturing capability for the plant and coordinate production-layout design with Corporate Industrial Engineering and Facilities.
  • Manage internal and external suppliers on a daily basis.
  • Evaluate and validate production-related items; the job description does not specify what is to be evaluated or validated.
  • Analyze and resolve design conflicts between multiple design holders, including TC and STC holders, and provide resolution and feedback on design procedures.
  • Formulate and implement the aircraft build sequence and tailor it to customer requirements.
  • Provide floor support, incorporate feedback, and work with operations technicians and management to mitigate issues and ensure understanding of the as-built plan and work instructions.
  • Design cable harnesses and cable layouts for product lines manufactured at the plant.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles to workflows.
  • Coordinate production of subassemblies with other departments and external vendors, and explain blueprint requirements.
  • Support aircraft production through work-instruction management, tooling design, improvement initiatives, and technical troubleshooting.
