About The Position
1X is building humanoid robots for home use, aiming to automate chores and give people back their time. This involves solving complex challenges in robotics, AI, and manufacturing simultaneously, at scale, and with safety as a priority. The company has been developing these robots since 2014 and is now focused on shipping its flagship product, NEO, a home robot designed for real-world interaction. The Hands Manufacturing group is responsible for transforming visionary engineering into scalable, highly reliable hardware. This team architects the foundational processes and complex systems for sophisticated humanoid hands and develops the production playbook. They operate with high velocity, attention to detail, and a collaborative, ego-free approach, partnering with cross-functional teams to achieve ambitious goals. As a Manufacturing Engineer, your charter is to build the manufacturing systems that enable 1X robots to be produced at scale. You will own critical processes from prototype through production, developing robust methods for machining, assembly, inspection, and validation to enhance quality, throughput, and repeatability. This role involves tackling novel problems, questioning conventions, rapid idea testing, learning from the production floor, and establishing dependable production systems. The expectation is a high standard of work, with direct physical feedback and a hands-on approach from all team members. Your work will directly influence the production readiness, hardware quality, and long-term scalability of 1X robotic systems. Key outcomes include owning manufacturing readiness for hand assemblies, improving first-pass yield, reducing variation, scrap, and rework, managing cycle time, throughput, and cost for manufacturing stations, developing and releasing qualified tooling and fixtures, and driving manufacturing issues to root cause with durable corrective actions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Mechatronics Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years with a Bachelor’s or 3+ years with a Master’s in manufacturing engineering for mechanical or electromechanical products.
- Hands-on experience developing precision assembly processes from prototype through production and sustaining.
- Proficiency with CAD, drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, tooling/fixture design, DFM/DFA, and statistical process validation.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot manufacturing issues to root cause and implement production-ready controls and corrective actions.
Nice To Haves
- Experience manufacturing robots, actuators, or other high-complexity electromechanical assemblies.
- Experience scaling a low-volume, high-mix process into repeatable higher-volume production using lean manufacturing, line balancing, automation, and traceability systems.
- Experience partnering with suppliers and contract manufacturers on process feasibility, tooling reviews, first-article builds, and production readiness.
Responsibilities
- Own manufacturing readiness for hand assemblies from prototype through production ramp.
- Improve first-pass yield and process capability while reducing variation, scrap, and rework.
- Own cycle time, throughput, and cost for assigned manufacturing stations.
- Develop and release qualified tooling, fixtures, gauges, and stations with validated processes and controls.
- Drive manufacturing issues to root cause and implement durable corrective actions.
