Manufacturing Engineer 2

Axillon AerospaceErlanger, KY

About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineer 2 provides a range of expertise in supporting and improving the manufacturing capabilities to produce products. The Engineer will contribute to improving a range of composites manufacturing processes that can directly impact the sustaining and growth efforts of operations. This position will be focused on design and deployment of aerospace composites manufacturing, but is not limited to: NPI, Process optimization, and Continuous Improvement as the Manufacturing Engineer will participate in both the introduction of new products and technology as well as optimization of existing processes.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of product design, programming, assembly, tooling, and materials pertaining to composites
  • Ability to study product and material requirements
  • Ability to research, design, modify, and implement manufacturing methods and equipment
  • Understanding of technical process variability and human process variability
  • Ability to maintain revision control for processes and design changes
  • Ability to analyze and plan workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout
  • Ability to calculate production, labor, and material costs
  • Ability to review production schedules
  • Ability to estimate future requirements
  • Ability to coordinate with outside vendors
  • Ability to create 3D CAD models
  • Ability to define fiber architectures, ply layups, and resin systems
  • Ability to optimize process
  • Ability to consult with process engineers on a “design for manufacturability” approach
  • Ability to develop manufacturing work instructions, tooling plans, and assembly methods (such as layup and curing)
  • Ability to use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate structural integrity
  • Ability to run physical material tests
  • Ability to lead root-cause analyses on material or process failures
  • Ability to implement corrective fixes
  • Ability to work with production, quality control, and suppliers

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of product design, programming, assembly, tooling, and materials pertaining to composites
  • Develops manufacturing processes and designs by studying product and material requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and implementing manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Understands and minimize both technical process variability and human process variability
  • Participates in Design and Manufacturing and maintaining revision control for processes and design changes.
  • Improves manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
  • Coordinates with outside vendors on development and design of composites manufacturing solutions
  • Regular, consistent and punctual attendance is required. May need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary
  • Design & Modeling: Create 3D CAD models and define fiber architectures, ply layups, and resin systems. Optimization of process and consulting with process engineers on a “design for manufacturability” approach
  • Process Development: Develop manufacturing work instructions, tooling plans, and assembly methods (such as layup and curing).
  • Testing & Analysis: Use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate structural integrity and run physical material tests.
  • Troubleshooting: Lead root-cause analyses on material or process failures and implement corrective fixes.
  • Collaboration: Work with production, quality control, and suppliers to meet project goals and budgets
