About The Position

The Manufacturing Automation Engineer II position is part of Abbott’s Diagnostics family of businesses, specifically within the Infectious Disease Business Unit, and is based in Scarborough, Maine. This role is crucial for supporting automated manufacturing processes, driving quality and cost-saving initiatives, and applying engineering principles to enhance operational performance. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and improve manufacturing equipment, implement automation solutions, and ensure compliance with cGMP, quality, and safety standards within a regulated manufacturing environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in the application of lean six sigma principles and the DMAIC approach.
  • Experience in change management principles and processes.
  • Robotics: Experience supporting and troubleshooting industrial robotic systems, including Fanuc, Stäubli, Mitsubishi, and Epson platforms.
  • Experience programming, troubleshooting, and supporting PLC-based automation systems (Allen-Bradley preferred).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working in a company operating under ISO, FDA, or similar quality systems or regulations.
  • Experience working in a GMP, FDA, ISO and USDA regulated environment.
  • Experience in cGMP and ISO 13485 regulations and practices.
  • Exposure to the application of lean six sigma principles and the DMAIC approach or a similar structured problem-solving system.
  • Exposure to statistical analysis software.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on the specification, acquisition, installation, and implementation of manufacturing equipment and automation solutions.
  • Support automation equipment upgrades related to safety improvements, obsolescence management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize automation systems, including machine logic, electromechanical equipment, and process controls.
  • Investigate manufacturing failures using structured problem-solving methodologies and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Conduct Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA) and evaluate equipment and process risks.
  • Design and execute experiments, validation activities, testing protocols, and data analysis to support process improvements.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Analyze equipment and manufacturing processes to determine suitability and develop recommendations for improvement.
  • Partner with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams to develop and implement technical solutions.
  • Develop, maintain, and revise manufacturing documentation, including SOPs, specifications, validation protocols, risk assessments, and work instructions.
  • Support engineering projects and coordinate activities to ensure timely execution and successful outcomes.
  • Initiate, investigate, and support resolution of Quality Incidents and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Incorporate safety, ergonomics, maintenance, and operator considerations into equipment and process design.
  • Manage engineering changes through Agile Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
  • Ensure compliance with FDA regulations, cGMP requirements, ISO standards, company policies, and applicable quality system requirements.
  • Foster effective collaboration and communication with employees, contractors, vendors, and other business partners.
  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of quality processes and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and accountability while supporting departmental objectives and business needs.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
