About IPSD Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary IPSD has a great opportunity for an experienced Manual Machinist II in our San Antonio, TX facility. As a manual machinist, you will be responsible for performing precision manual machining operations on engine blocks, cylinder heads, and engine components using conventional equipment. You will primarily work with the DeVlieg Spiramatic jig mill. This role involves setting up and operating horizontal and vertical mills, lathes, grinders, and precision tooling as well as interpreting engineering drawings and tolerances, and troubleshooting dimensional or surface issues. Additionally, you will apply strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and craftsmanship to restore components to specification while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years’ experience as a manual machinist in a production or repair environment
  • Proven ability to independently set up and operate manual lathes, mills, and surface grinders
  • Hands-on experience machining metal/alloy components
  • Ability to evaluate nonconforming parts and determine appropriate rework or salvage methods
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and specifications
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, etc.)
  • Ability to troubleshoot dimensional and surface finish issues and apply corrective machining solutions
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and no formal training or upskilling
  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to perform repetitive operations
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Must successfully complete a background, drug, and medical screening

Nice To Haves

  • Previous manual machining experience in engine manufacturing or automotive/heavy equipment environment
  • Experience with engine block and cylinder head rework operations

Responsibilities

  • Perform precision manual machining and rework operations on engine blocks, cylinder heads, and related engine components to restore parts to specification
  • Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, surface grinders, and other conventional machining equipment
  • Evaluate nonconforming components to determine feasible rework or salvage methods in accordance with engineering and quality requirements
  • Interpret and execute work from engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and work instructions
  • Diagnose dimensional, geometric, and surface finish issues and apply appropriate machining solutions
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments to verify conformance before, during, and after machining
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to ensure reworked components meet functional and quality standards
  • Document rework processes, measurements, and outcomes in accordance with company and quality system requirements
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, scrap reduction, and process capability
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant work environment in accordance with company and regulatory standards
  • Submit and assist with Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives
  • Follow standard operating procedures and specific work instructions
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to ensure reworked components meet functional and quality standards
  • Perform any other duties as assigned
