About The Position

WSYR-TV Newschannel 9, the Nexstar ABC television affiliate in Syracuse, NY, is seeking a Managing Producer to help lead its winning news team. The market leader in beautiful Central New York is expanding its operation, launching an all-new television streaming platform. The Managing Producer plays a pivotal role in the mission to grow a news audience on all platforms, including broadcast, digital, OTT, and social.

Requirements

  • Strong news judgment and high journalistic integrity.
  • Strong awareness of news and current events.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and make sound editorial decisions in real-time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Strong, candid knowledge of self & capabilities and display the willingness & ability to take action to learn, improve, and grow.
  • Professional savvy and collegial demeanor when interacting with colleagues and members of the public.
  • Work well under pressure ability to handle breaking news and last-minute changes with aplomb.
  • Low-to-zero call/approach reluctance ability to confidently engage with viewers, officials, those affected by stories, and others to cultivate story leads and information.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work-related experience required to succeed in the role.
  • Flexibility to work any shift, as coverage needs demand staffing changes.
  • Mastery of AP writing style to edit and author digital, social, and on-air content.
  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license required for hire.
  • A clean driving record is required and must be maintained to be able to safely & confidently operate company motor vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Media, Creative Writing, English, or a related field.
  • Strong non-linear video editing skills and familiarity with Adobe Premiere video editing software.
  • Familiarity with ENPS rundown and story management system.
  • Knowledge of and confidence with OBS.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and teach teammates to grow in confidence and capability.
  • Use informed news judgment, showcasing techniques, and news research to lead the team in building newscasts and streams which serve the needs and meet the preferences of local viewers.
  • Quickly adjust newscasts and streams to accommodate breaking news and severe weather coverage.
  • Edit and author strong copy with correct grammar, punctuation, editorial style, and formatting to meet the requirements of each on-air, digital, and social distribution platform.
  • Ensure that all content produced meets company standards for journalistic integrity, timeliness, and production quality.
  • Cooperate and communicate clearly, directly, and regularly with news & production teammates and other station departments.
  • Organize and delegate to ensure booking of timely live interview guests for morning programs.
  • Line produces when necessary.
