About The Position

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Managing Photo Editor to oversee our DC bureau. The role is a key part of the senior leadership of the Photo department. Managing Photo Editors work with the Deputy Photo Directors and Photo Director to lead our photo editing team. You will be actively photo editing, as well as managing a small group of news photo editors in photographic assigning, research and story production. We are seeking an editor who has proven experience in political coverage, including elections, voter issues, immigration, justice and national security. Our content and storytelling requires bold digital display on mobile and desktop platforms, and a thoughtful approach to print requirements. The Managing Photo Editor will be responsible for maintaining a strong and dynamic quality of photography and photo-illustration. You will facilitate innovative visual approaches to the creation and presentation of our online content. You will attend weekly bureau and art meetings and will work closely with a team of editors, coverage chiefs, publishing and print editors, platform leads, section art directors, graphics, video and audience colleagues on daily and enterprise coverage. This position ideally will be based in Washington D.C. but we are open to candidates in NY. It will report to the Deputy Director of Photography.

Requirements

  • An enthusiasm for good journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics.
  • Experience leading political coverage, including White House, Congress, elections and campaigns
  • Proven organizational, communication, leadership and cross-team collaborative abilities.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Strong experience prioritizing best opportunities for visual stories using judgment based on newsroom and departmental strategy and resources.
  • Deep knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
  • Familiarity with audience data tools and strategies for encouraging readers to engage with digital content
  • Thorough working knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools.
  • Experience with news gathering and research tools.
  • A minimum of 8 years experience in a newsroom, including ideally at least two years in a leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and produce breaking news, daily news and longer-form top enterprise articles, collaborating with reporters and editors, visual colleagues, SEO and platform teams, as well as Bureau and section chiefs and your department manager.
  • Anticipate photographic and other needs as stories develop.
  • Collaborate with the Director and Deputies of the department on breaking news coverage and events, as well as cross-coverage area initiatives and projects.
  • Drive excellence in photographic assigning as well as research.
  • Work with your reports and across teams to pitch and create innovative visual and multimedia approaches to our storytelling.
  • Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism.
  • Work in our CMS to combine different formats, newsroom tools and visual elements.
  • Work with the editing desk, platform and off-platform editors to execute and surface the work strategically across all platforms.
  • Mentor your reports on editing, news judgment, prioritization and deadlines.
  • Drive long term priorities, planning and innovation for the coverage area.
  • Partner with Photo leadership on broader training and mentoring for the team.
  • Work with your team on assignments, photographer briefs, and estimates, ensuring larger budget projects meet department goals.
  • Negotiate budgets with photographers and photography archives/individuals and be responsible for monthly and annual budget goals for your team.
  • Work with department leadership on the data and analytics for your team’s output, enabling us to guide coverage decisions and to monitor the success of our work.
  • Manage team scheduling with Photo Dir. of Operations, including vacation and comp time.
  • Manage overtime assigning and approval for your reports.
  • Conduct performance reviews of your team.
