The Managing Engineer (Software Development/Container Workloads) leads a team responsible for designing and building reference applications and implementation patterns that promote engineering best practices across the enterprise. These reference implementations demonstrate proven approaches for integrating with core platforms, services, and infrastructure, enabling engineering teams to build secure, scalable, and resilient applications. This role is both a people leader and a hands-on technical leader, expected to operate as the most senior engineer on the team. The Managing Engineer drives architectural decisions, contributes directly to design and code, and ensures that all reference implementations reflect production-grade standards for performance, reliability, and efficiency. The Managing Engineer applies expertise in software engineering, distributed systems, and platform integration to produce high-quality, reusable exemplars (e.g., service-to-cache integrations, messaging patterns, service-to-service communication). They ensure these patterns are not only functional but optimized for real-world enterprise scale and operational excellence. In addition to team leadership responsibilities, this role has broad organizational impact, influencing engineering standards, guiding adoption of best practices, and partnering with platform, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure alignment. The Allstate internal job title for this position is Software Engineer Manager.
