About The Position

This is the top position in The Post and Courier's Pee Dee newsroom and is responsible for daily news gathering across all topic areas. This person manages a fast-moving, digital newsroom of two reporters and two interns in cooperation with our partners at Francis Marion University. The right person must be a strong presence in the community and will be a player-coach who contributes to the daily and enterprise news report. Deep understanding of digital media and a start-up mentality, work ethic and energy. A competitive spirit will be necessary as this digital-only newsroom takes on more traditional competitors in the market. This is a job for a self-starter who relishes the fast pace of digital news and thrives under the pressure of lofty goals and expectations. Must be an accomplished and experienced editor and/or digital journalist. Preference will be given to those with a background managing toward specific digital audience goals, including paid digital subscribers. Must demonstrate an ability to function in a stressful, fast-moving and ever-changing environment. Must be proficient with grammar, AP style and libel law. The Managing Editor must be deeply involved in the community, attending key community events and gatherings and building meaningful relationships with key stakeholders. They must also be prepare to ask all of their employees to do the same. The Managing Editor is responsible for ensuring writing and reporting is of the highest quality. The ability to adapt to change and additional duties as assigned is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field
  • 10 or more years of demonstrated journalism experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills associated with developing trusting relationships and maintaining a high level of confidentiality
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow through
  • Proficient with grammar, AP style and libel law
  • Ability to function in a stressful, fast-moving and ever-changing environment
  • Ability to adapt to change and additional duties as assigned
