About The Position

New York Common Pantry is one of the city’s largest hunger relief organizations, providing food assistance, case management services, senior food provision, nutrition education, and hygiene services. We are a dynamic, mission-driven organization experiencing rapid growth and expansion. NYCP is a poverty-fighting organization that reduces hunger and promotes dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach to reach over 122,000 distinct people -- over 729,000 visitors each year. Last year, we served over 11 million meals. Through an array of programs that we offer, we look to establish long-term stability for those we serve. Amid an exciting growth and development period, we seek a Managing Director of Development to strengthen our fundraising program. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to collaborate with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) on the creation and rapid expansion of our major gifts program from its inception. As a key member of our Development team, the ideal candidate will focus on developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan, including strategies for both Individual Giving and Institutional Giving (Foundations, Corporations, Government, and Community Partners), focusing on prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. We are searching for a professional with a proven track record in major gifts, eager to apply their expertise in cultivating and strategically expanding our major gifts program and pipeline. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to innovation and teamwork, which are crucial as they will lead and mentor the fundraising team. The role is designed for someone who is organized and skilled in balancing long-term strategic planning with immediate operational demands, demonstrating an ability to effectively navigate the organization's needs, abilities, and resources. The Managing Director of Development will report to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) at 8 East 109th, New York, NY 10029. The position is full-time, exempted. This role has flexibility for hybrid work, requiring travel to meet with donors across the Tri-State. Leading a dedicated team of four, the Managing Director of Development is at the forefront of advancing NYCP’s mission through strategic donor engagement and stewardship. Four direct reports to include Senior Individual Giving Associate, Individual Giving Associate, Senior Grant Writer, and a Development & Grants Associate.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in fundraising, including a successful track record of securing six-figure gifts is required.
Commitment to helping the communities in need and NYCP’s work and mission.
Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge NXT is required.
Professional written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills; managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the diplomacy, poise, and collaborative approach required to build strong relationships with board members, volunteers, major donors, and colleagues across departments.
Strategic and adaptable leader who can drive innovation, manage change, and lead teams toward ambitious fundraising goals.
Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing team members.
Comfortable engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive.
Multi-task and work in a highly trafficked area.
Travel between multiple locations.

Responsibilities

Develop and oversee the execution of a strategic annual fundraising plan targeting Individual and Institutional (Foundations, Corporations, Government, and Community Partners) donors. The plan should include specific goals and metrics aligned with the organization's budget and growth objectives.
Design and implement strategies to diversify and grow revenue across Individual and Institutional donors.
Manage a portfolio of Individual and Institutional donors, focusing on strategic cultivation, personalized engagement, and donor retention and growth.
Partner with the Program team to research, identify, secure, and steward government grants. Oversee the grant writing, submission, and reporting process in coordination with the Program, Finance, and Development teams.
Collaborate with the CDO and other members of the Development team to launch new donor recognition societies, including event calendars and communication plans that deepen donor engagement.
Develop and implement strategies to cultivate and sustain meaningful relationships with donors and prospects through timely, personalized outreach and recognition efforts.
Leverage Raiser’s Edge NXT to track, analyze, and report on donor engagement. Ensure data integrity and use the system to support strategic decisions in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Provide guidance and training to staff on database management and moves management best practices.
Support the CDO on development operations, donor engagement initiatives, and board-related activities.
Lead, mentor, and support a fundraising team of four, fostering a collaborative culture and encouraging professional development.
Maintain an up-to-date institutional giving calendar and funding directory to support timely and strategic proposal submissions.
Manage the development team’s budget, monitor performance against revenue goals, and provide regular financial updates to the Finance team.
In partnership with the CDO, contribute to setting team goals and preparing the annual development budget and revenue projections.
Perform additional duties as needed to support departmental and organizational priorities.
