About The Position

We are seeking a senior Managing Director, Investment Specialist – Structured Solutions to serve as the lead investment voice for our Alternatives platform. This individual will act as a trusted advisor to clients, a strategic partner to portfolio management teams, and a key contributor to business growth across institutional and wealth channels. This is a highly visible role requiring deep expertise in alternative investments—including private equity, private credit, hedge funds, and liquid alternatives—combined with exceptional communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

Requirements

  • 15+ years in asset management, alternatives, or client-facing investment roles
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or Business
  • CFA, CAIA, or MBA strongly preferred
  • Deep expertise in alternative investments (private markets, hedge funds, liquid alternatives)
  • Strong understanding of portfolio construction, performance attribution, and risk frameworks
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills (written and verbal)
  • Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and build long-term client relationships
  • Strong leadership and team-building experience
  • Ability to operate effectively in complex, matrixed environments
  • Typically 12 – 15 years of relevant experience and a post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Post graduate degree in business, economics or finance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary investment spokesperson for the Alternatives platform across institutional, intermediary, and high-net-worth clients
  • Lead and support client meetings, due diligence sessions, and investment update calls
  • Build credibility with consultants, advisors, and sophisticated investors
  • Translate complex investment strategies, portfolio construction, performance drivers, and risk metrics into compelling, client-ready messaging
  • Provide forward-looking market insights aligned with portfolio positioning and macroeconomic themes
  • Ensure consistency and clarity in all investment communications
  • Partner with Distribution to support new business development and client retention initiatives
  • Participate in prospect meetings and identify opportunities to expand mandates
  • Help shape product positioning and go-to-market strategies
  • Lead development of high-quality investment content including whitepapers, market commentaries, and client communications
  • Represent the firm at client events, conferences, and industry forums
  • Contribute to the firm’s external brand as a thought leader in alternative investments
  • Collaborate closely with Portfolio Managers to align on investment messaging and strategy articulation
  • Act as the voice of the client—bringing market feedback into investment and product discussions
  • Lead and build a high-performing Investment Specialist team (where applicable)
  • Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Product, Marketing, Legal/Compliance, and Operations
  • Maintain deep knowledge of alternative investment structures, competitive landscape, and industry trends
  • Monitor macroeconomic developments and their impact on portfolios
  • Support new product development and enhancements to existing offerings
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team of Investment Specialists
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and scalability of investment messaging
  • Establish best practices across content development, client engagement, and sales enablement
  • Drive collaboration across investment, distribution, and product teams
  • Develops investment ideas, investment themes, and asset allocation recommendations that are used by other investment areas within the firm.
  • Generates investment ideas but does not manage portfolios.

  • Acts as the prime contact for internal/external stakeholder relationships, which may include regulators.
  • Defines business requirements for analytics & reporting to ensure data insights inform business decision making.
  • Leads change management programs of varying scope and type, including readiness assessments, planning, stakeholder management, execution, evaluation and sustainment of initiatives.
  • Collaborates across BMO to develop communications strategies and ensure consistency of messaging, in order to positively influence or change behaviour.
  • Develops and recommends strategies to achieve investment goals of the organisation and / or its clients.
  • Creates frameworks for analysing alternative investment and risk scenarios (e.g. overall investment return, interplay of various asset classes or securities, comparative market returns).
  • Forecasts market changes based on economic and industry analyses; monitors technical trading trends.
  • May help develop and market investment products, services and solutions.
  • Contributes to business development in client and industry facing activities and events.
  • Continuously pursues and identifies potential risk within our business and processes.
  • Understands and adheres to all compliance requirements; ensures supporting documentation is maintained.
  • Operates at a group/enterprise-wide level and serves as a senior specialist resource across BMO.
  • Influences how teams/groups work together.
