About The Position

The Manager, Volunteer Engagement leads the strategy, execution and continuous improvement of the SPCA of Texas volunteer program. This role is responsible for cultivating a high-impact, mission-driven volunteer experience that strengthens operations, advances animal welfare outcomes and deepens community engagement. The Manager, Volunteer Engagement provides leadership to the Volunteer Engagement Team, collaborates cross-functionally with internal partners and ensures volunteers are effectively recruited, trained, supported and retained across all programs and locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3–5) years of progressive people leadership experience, including supervising staff or leading teams, with demonstrated ability to coach and develop others.
  • Minimum of three (3–5) years of experience in volunteer engagement, community engagement, nonprofit operations or a related people-centered field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, human resources, nonprofit management or a related field required; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a strategic thought partner, contributing ideas, insights and solutions that support organizational goals and People and Culture initiatives.
  • Strong comfort with technology and data systems, including volunteer management platforms, reporting tools and digital communication channels.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Good driving record
  • Demonstrated ability to assess situations, evaluate risks and benefits, and make sound, timely decisions aligned with organizational priorities, safety standards and values.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly, adapt messaging to diverse audiences and facilitate understanding across volunteers, staff and leadership.
  • Ability to assess individual, team and program performance, identify opportunities for improvement and implement corrective actions to enhance effectiveness and outcomes.
  • Leads with clarity, empathy and accountability; builds trust, sets clear expectations, provides constructive feedback and supports the growth and success of others.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, with the ability to travel regularly between SPCA of Texas locations and off-site events as required.
  • Ability to safely exert physical effort, including lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is a plus and strongly preferred.
  • Animal handling experience or prior work in an animal welfare or sheltering environment is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Model and actively promote the SPCA of Texas Core Values through leadership, decision-making and daily interactions with volunteers, staff and community partners.
  • Provide strategic oversight of daily volunteer operations at the Dallas Animal Care Center, Russell H. Perry Pet Resource Center, Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, participating cat adoption location, and off-site events, ensuring effective utilization and meaningful engagement of volunteers.
  • Supervise and support the Volunteer Engagement Team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous learning.
  • Lead, coach, motivate and evaluate volunteers to ensure alignment with organizational standards, policies and mission impact.
  • Partner with leaders across departments to conduct ongoing needs assessments, aligning volunteer capacity with operational priorities and programmatic goals.
  • Proactively engage with volunteers and staff to strengthen relationships, address challenges and continuously enhance the volunteer experience.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas by articulating the organization’s mission, impact and community value by encouraging broader support and involvement.
  • Plan and facilitate regular volunteer department meetings and engagement opportunities that promote communication, alignment and shared purpose.
  • Design and implement ongoing learning and development opportunities (such as trainings, workshops and skill-building sessions) to support team and volunteer effectiveness.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of volunteer program best practices, trends and engagement strategies. Apply these to program development and execution.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of SPCA of Texas policies, procedures and operational standards, ensuring consistent application across the volunteer program.
  • Ensure all safety guidelines and protocols are communicated, maintained and enforced to protect volunteers, staff, animals, and the organization.
  • Maintain open, collaborative communication with animal care, behavior and operations leadership regarding existing and evolving policies, procedures and program needs.
  • Educate and train volunteers on organizational policies, procedures and role-specific responsibilities.
  • Serves as a strategic thought partner to the Director, People and Culture by bringing insights, ideas and solutions rooted in data, experience and frontline perspective to continuously evaluate processes.
  • Deliver engaging presentations and hands-on training sessions (including volunteer orientations, animal handling trainings, group engagement experiences and recruitment events).
  • Demonstrates strong comfort with technology, data and systems; able to leverage tools to improve volunteer engagement, communication and operational efficiency.
  • Oversee and maintain the volunteer database, ensuring accurate, timely documentation of volunteer records, participation, training and engagement metrics.
  • Develop and implement effective recruitment, onboarding and retention strategies to build a diverse, reliable and committed volunteer base.
  • Supervise students completing school-related community service requirements, providing guidance, evaluations and feedback as appropriate.
  • Complete, review, and follow up on volunteer incident reports in accordance with organizational policies and risk management practices.
  • Serve as an administrator for the SPCA of Texas Volunteer Facebook and Instagram page, ensuring adherence to community guidelines.
  • Represent the Volunteer Engagement Department during selected holidays and special events as needed.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Director, People and Culture.
