About The Position

The Manager facilitates matriculation of all Student Veterans, spouses and dependents of Veterans attending OCC. Will assist veteran and active duty military students, and their dependents in coordinating veterans' education benefits. The Manager will assist students by monitoring and evaluating their progress toward reaching their educational goals in accordance with OCC regulations and will follow Department of Veterans Affairs policies and procedures. The Manager counsels student veterans and helps them develop educational plans in relation to their receipt of education benefits from the government. Manager will maintain communication with all student veterans, spouses and dependents of veterans and meet with new and prospective student veterans from all majors across the college. Manager will advise students and provide information on all phases of the veterans' process in person or by the phone or e-mail. Manager will be the OCC liaison when engaging with community partners to bring awareness and support to the student veteran population and will provide linkage to community services to all student veterans, spouses and dependents as well as any local community Veterans. Manager will maintain a smooth operation of the Owens Veterans Services Center and will work with the Owens Foundation and Alumni Association while engaging community support. Manager will be the backup processor to complete all GI BILL certifications.

Requirements

Knowledge of local, state, and federal veterans programs and educational benefits that are provided to veterans and the family or spouse of a veteran.
Knowledge of State or Federal law in relation to the military.
Knowledge of VA ONCE certifying computer system.
Knowledge of VA services provided to disabled veterans.
Experience serving in the United States Military.
Knowledge regarding the community college student and Student Services and/or post-Secondary education environments.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Workday, Blackboard, Groupwise, Onbase, U-Select, CAPP, The OCC Website and the internet in general.
Knowledge of all schools, majors, and offices across campus to best assist students with selecting academic coursework and referring them to the proper office for help.
Knowledge of the Ohio Transfer Module and other transfer articulation agreements in and out of state.
Demonstrated internet communication skills.
Demonstrated oral & written communication & presentation.
Ability to listen and communicate clearly & effectively.
Ability to multi-task at times in a fast-paced environment and must be able to work within a team and independently.
Ability to function in a professional way with many stakeholders including students, staff, faculty and community members.
Utilizes the computer to assist students and uses U-Select, CAPP, Blackboard, Workday, Onbase, The OCC website and online class schedule, shared Network drives, the internet for research, and E-mail.
Ability to learn local, state, and federal law in relation to veterans and students serving in the military.
Ability to learn the VA ONCE certifying system to be able to process and provide veteran students with educational benefits.
Ability to work with other government agencies to assist veteran students with benefits.
Ability to learn various technology required to perform enrollment functions (i.e. colleges student information system , scanned document system, student audit system & statewide transfer system).

Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Adult Education, Liberal Arts, Counseling, Social Work or general studies OR Associate degree or two-year technical certificate and two years experience working in a Veterans Services office.
2 years experience in a setting where the applicant served as an advisor, mentor, counselor or supervisor.
2 years experience with oral and written communication.
Intermediate computer skills and the ability to use e-mail, a multi-line phone system, do research on the internet, and demonstrated experience with technology.

Responsibilities

Counsels Veteran students and helps them develop educational plans in relation to their receipt of education benefits from the government.
Maintains a caseload of current veteran students and meets with new and prospective veteran students from all majors across the college.
Advises students and provides information on all phases of the veterans process in person or by the phone or e-mail.
Serves as a liaison between veteran students and the OCC faculty, Staff, and outside entities.
Promotes College's services and opportunities to area military installations, organizations, and entities.
Develops, carries out and measures a recruitment and retention plan for veteran, active duty military students.
Works collaboratively with staff from the Office of Admissions, Advising, Marketing and other campus and community offices.
Provides support in the form of supervision and training for the School Certifying Official and VA work study students.
Serves as the contact person for the ConAP program, Ohio National Guard Scholarship and tuition assistance used by all veterans.
Provides office coverage and direct service to students as needed, including extended office hours during start of semester and during peak times.
May travel in state or out of state for professional development and recruitment purposes.
Develops recruitment plan and assists with recruitment, student services, and advising events across campus.
Works a flexible schedule during busy registration periods that may include evenings when the office is open.
Works a flexible schedule during busy registration periods and works recruitment events that may include Saturdays.
May engage in recruitment activities on base during the weekend.
May provide office or event coverage one weekend.
