About The Position

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is seeking a Manager, Treasury and Accounting to join their team. NCC is a leading private land conservation organization dedicated to protecting important natural areas and the species they sustain. This role is based out of the downtown Toronto office with a hybrid work model. The organization emphasizes a people-focused culture with opportunities for learning and growth. The Manager, Treasury and Accounting will lead daily treasury activities, including cash management, banking relationships, and transaction processing. This includes managing back-office settlement, cash receipts/payments, and bank reconciliations in compliance with regulatory standards. Responsibilities also include maintaining accurate forecasts, investment portfolio analysis, and supporting administrative functions like procure-to-pay and property acquisition payments. Reporting to the Director of Corporate Finance, the role involves supervising a team and acting as an advisor to various stakeholders within the organization.

Requirements

  • Completed post-secondary education in a related field (i.e. commerce, finance, economics).
  • CPA certification.
  • 5+ years of relevant accounting, finance, or treasury experience.
  • At least 1 year in a people manager role.
  • Strong financial modeling and data mining skills.
  • Understanding of endowment management, investment mutualization, and portfolio management.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment with frequent changes and tight timeline demands.
  • Proven ability to be an independent self-starter, who can also work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities within structured deadlines and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to think outside the box, recognize key risks, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen the existing control environment.
  • Ability to drive efficiencies and is analytically minded.
  • Proven ability to be an effective communicator and relationship builder.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Powerpoint.
  • Proficient with citizen developer tools like Power Apps and Power BI.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee liquidity management, including reviewing daily cash requirements, planning cash flow, investing/divesting from short-term accounts, and reporting on weekly cash movements.
  • Lead and report the forecast of NCC’s cash position, calculate liquidity metrics, and LT endowment capacity (LTEC) position.
  • Manage foreign exchange conversions (US funds) when required.
  • Ensure all bank accounts are reconciled in a timely manner.
  • Ensure timely recording of movements in the TBLCF internal loan fund, monthly reporting, forecasting, and drafting quarterly reporting of the fund.
  • Prepare working papers and draft notes for annual reporting of the liquidity and the internal loan fund.
  • Oversee the procure-to-pay function, including purchase orders, Concur, Apex, US Bank VISA, and credit card management.
  • Ensure all approved accounts payable transactions in Concur systems are transferred to the financial systems for payments.
  • Ensure all property-related deposits, interim and final payments, and contributions to third parties are disbursed in line with contractual obligations.
  • Review bi-weekly payments file and approve payments to authorized levels.
  • Ensure the accounts payable ledger is regularly reconciled with the general ledger and appropriate working papers and reporting is completed for the annual audit.
  • Oversee gift of securities through discount brokerage account.
  • Oversee timely and accurate processing of direct revenue in Financial Edge to ensure entries are recorded per GAAP, NCC policies, and CRA regulations.
  • Exercise judgment to identify, diagnose, and review land, endowment, and internal/external loan-related entries and payments.
  • Ensure external and internal loan drawdowns and repayments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provide specialized consulting, analytical, and technical support.
  • Monitor and track investment transactions, ensuring timely disbursements for private equity capital calls and semi-annual draw spending allocations.
  • Ensure all endowment-related transactions are reconciled between categories and recorded in the endowment software regularly.
  • Mutualize endowments quarterly and ensure all transactions are timely and accurately recorded in the ERP.
  • Draft reporting for the investment committee and provide recommendations to leadership on trending issues and effective management of the Investment Committee.
  • Annually reconcile and report on changes to endowment funds by category and draft financial statement notes related to investments and endowments.
  • Responsible for external audit reporting requirements related to treasury and investment functions.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in all regulations, directives, and guidance applicable to the Treasury group, including interpreting regulations and understanding emerging issues.
  • Ensure NCC is compliant with restricted funds policies and external regulations.
  • Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including bankers and investment managers, addressing their needs by providing services to NCC.
  • Oversee staff development, hiring, and performance evaluations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert to identify opportunities to streamline processes and address business issues in ERP implementations.
